Wow

Looks like Apple/AT&T pissed off a lot of people…lol
Anyway, I’ll be releasing GV Mobile v1.2 on Cydia for free today or tomorrow, with an update coming in a couple weeks. Why free? People pirate it anyway, so why not. I do appreciate everyone that bought it – you are the ones that fueled this app to be what it is today. That doesn’t mean you have to go get a refund (because that would hurt me, not Apple).
Let’s put some pressure on Google to release the API for Google Voice! Then I can start doing some really cool shit stuff… 🙂

UPDATE: Complain to Apple @ http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  1. If i makes you feel better I *Tried* to buy it in the app store but it was already too late… so then I pirated it.

  2. I bought it. Glad I did. Enormously upset with Apple and AT&T over this brain-dead move!

I will be looking for ways to keep my business and money away from them, and this is another brick in the wall that has me rethinking my current work of developing for the iPhone. I’m completely serious about that, and this is something I’ve been moving on for well over a year. The whole thing makes me pretty sad, Apple hasn’t disappointed me much since 2004 (when I first got involved with iPods and then Macs).

  3. Sean, sorry to see it go. I bought it to text and call my family over in Australia. great app. i agree on the donation link. Best of luck

  4. I smell Class Action in the air – nice of Apple to pull apps that people pay for effectively killing support for them. All the while, they still collected their 30%!

  5. Thanks Sean. You did a great job with GV Mobile and a great job marketing it via twitter. I look forward to seeing v1.2

  6. Hey first of all I like the free app, but I am curious do you have a paypal donation area setup. I’d be willing to pay 2.99 you also could setup gvmobile 1.2 for cash. Saurik(Jay Freeman) does have that as an option as well.

  7. That’s great – at least for us, though sorry you’re taking the hit. I’ve been using GVMobile since purchasing it on the apps store three weeks ago. Will I be able to get updates somehow, assuming that iTunes doesn’t remove it when I sync? One thing the app really needs is the ability to toggle the “Do Not Disturb” on or off.

  8. I purchased this from the app store about 10 days ago. It’s been a great addition to the iPhone. I can’t help shaking my head. I just purchased my iPhone last month. I have always stayed away from Apple products for just this reason. Apple likes to think they know better than their customers and play God with their s/w and hardware policies. But, when the Palm Pre wouldn’t work for me (bad Sprint coverage) I gave in and bought the iPhone. Already this crap is from Apple is effecting me. It’s too bad I am past my 30 day return limit. Ah, well I should have known better than to but anything from Apple. My fault.

  9. I’m glad I purchased it in the app store. I don’t regret a thing and enjoy the app.
I even got a free code from you too and had my buddy pick-up a copy. He loves it.
Hopefully apple wont pull it completely and delete it from my apps (if there is a way to do that)
I’ll jailbreak tonight to follow you in Cydia-land.
    Apple/ATT = SKANKS

  10. Sean,

I’ve already purchased GV Mobile from the app store, but if you add a donation link I’ll also donate once the app is available via Cydia.

  11. Wait up!
Might be a dumb question but if there is no API how do you manage to get all those features to work?
Teach me something and Yes with the DONATION link.

  12. Dude, I paid for the app and am glad I did. It truly is a great app. You should get some money from your hard work. Put it on Cydia for the price you put it on the App Store for. People will pay for it if it truly is a good app.

  13. I’m curious as to what will happen to those of us with the GV Mobile application already on our iPhone? Will Apple try to remove the application through an update? As of this morning the GV Mobile app still works on my phone. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  14. BrandonG777 :
Apple just gave everyone one big reason to jailbreak.

There’s always been reason to jailbreak. I for one would have zero interest in an iPhone that wasn’t jailbroken. IMHO, an out of the box iPhone is simply a shiny, greasy, name brand trinket.

If it weren’t for the jailbreak community I’m sure I’d be an Android early adopter. This move by Apple actually has me re-thinking jumping ship to the Android platform.

  15. Is there a place we can donate a few bucks for your efforts, instead of just getting the app for free? I would have paid for it, but I setup my Google Voice too late.

  16. Damn. I missed it in the store but will certainly pick it up from Cydia and throw you a few bucks. I’ve been a GV/GC user for years. This app sounds awesome.

  17. I wholeheartedly agree, innovative developers like you, Sean, are what continue to make smartphones the incredible devices that they are. The software is the focus now – the hardware only compliments it – and your app is a great example of that.

I’d gladly pay for GV Mobile on the Cydia store or donate via a link on your site – you deserve compensation for your efforts!

  18. Bought it out of pure solidarity.

Go buy yourself a beer or other favorite alcoholic beverage- you earned it!

    Keep those updates comin’!

  19. It’s time to rail against the “MAN.” Screw Apple/at&t. Early adopter of GV Mobile. I see Android in my future.

  20. Dude, you’re all over the internet. 🙂

Every article that talks about this also talks about your app.

You’d be very wise to work in a donate button– capture this free publicity while it lasts!

  21. Listen up everybody! I work in a call center, so I truly understand the costs and impacts to a company when the phone starts ringing and wont stop. If you really want to return some of the punishment to AT&T and Apple… just pick up the phone! Give the AT&T customer care department a call and try to keep them on the phone for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Make a game out of it.

Here’s the kicker though, be sure to make clear that you are calling to express concern over iPhone limitations, aka disabled MMS and removing apps that you already paid for such as GV Mobile. Even when the rep tells you it was an Apple issue, just keep them on the phone by asking about how to lower your bill.

Large Call Volume + Long Call Handle Time = Higher Cost per Call

We start to drive up costs and they’ll listen!

  22. Hey Sean big props on the decision to release on cydia. I already own the app but I’ll throw you a few bucks through paypal for the update. I’ve been somewhat of a critic in the past so I wanted to say I think you’re handling this app ban with a lot of class.

  23. Everyone is so pissed off at AT&T, but let’s be real for a moment… *APPLE* was the one who pulled the application, not AT&T. Many people somehow think that Apple is beholden to these partnerships, when the fact is Apple controls the shots here.

Whatever the case may be, its a sleazy move by the Cupertino company, and definitely stifles innovation on their handset. The HTC Hero is not enough to pull me away from my iPhone just yet, but if its any indication where Android will be a year from now, its looking mighty attractive. I’m already jealous that my friend can integrate Google Voice on his G1, and was praying for a native application from Google that supported push notification.

Sad day… Sean, you’re app is still awesome, though. I keep my early adoptions like a badge (ex. Netshare), and can’t wait to see what its going to look like through Cydia. Thanks!!

    Excellent suggestion!

  25. Reminder to those asking for a Donation Link:

Sean already has a Paypal button to donate on this very page…

Or were you guys talking about a donate button/ link built into the app itself?

  26. Sean thanks for the great app. I was fortunate to get my GV number last week and quickly purchased the app. It saved my wife and I a ton on SMS charges. She just got her GV invite last night but it was to late to download. Have you been contacted at all by Google? Imade the switch from a Blackberry to the iPhone a month go and I’m already starting to regret that decision!

  27. Bought the app even though it’s somewhat useless to me right now in Canada, but I’m glad I did.

Is there any way for you to re-submit to apple if you make it only available on the iPod touch? What about making it available in Canada where AT&T doesn’t exist?

  28. Hey Sean, when it comes onto Cydia I’ll donate. I’ve already purchased it from the Apple store way back when, but I’ll donate so you can keep it going on Cydia. Thanks for all the hard work!

  29. I got your free version of GV Mobile from Apple app store recently and liked it. Would have bought full version if not for the Apple Ministry of Application Censorship. I have now jailbroken my 3GS, eagerly await your app on Cydia. I am an Apple Mac OS engineering team alumni, am embarrassed by their censorship behavior of late.

  30. Sean, as soon as you have this app up on Cydia and I install it, I’ll def want to contribute to your work. Bullshit both ATT and Apple! I’m very unhappy that I own several Apple’s products and get stuck into 2 years contract with ATT.

  31. It doesn’t seem to install correctly on my iPhone. It fails to locate the executable every time it tries to install. Any advice? I’d love to check out this app that I wish I would’ve heard about sooner 🙂

  32. Sean, good for you for releasing it on Cydia. Glad to see you not just sitting back and taking from Apple. I’m appauled at how they chose to handle this – approving it, then yanking it from the app store. GV Mobile was the first app I bought after activating my new 3GS. Your app is my must have app and probably gets the most use out of anything on my iphone! Keep the updates coming and keep up the good work!

  33. Sean, if I already have the paid app will I be able to update it through cydia or will I need to install a different version? I’m already jailbroken.
    Thanks for the great app.

    Dan

  34. Hell yeah man! I am extremely excited that you’re releasing this for the Jailbroken masses. It’s a damn shame what Apple/at&t did…

  35. Any body think updating to OS 3.1 is a must have. I like the ease of tethering from iphonehacks.com. Since 3.1 will stop this I would rather not update. Although if the battery gets more efficent I just might. Any thoughts?

  36. With all that’s been happening the past 24 hours, good to see that some things don’t change. People are still requesting push notification.

I feel bad that this happened. Bad for you as a developer, and terrible for us as users. I never thought I’d jailbreak, but maybe I’ll give it a shot.

But seriously, we need push. 🙂

  37. Don’t know if I will be able to use it from Canada, I did activate my GV account through a proxy. If I can use it in Canada, you have a donation from me.

  38. supported u back when u were having issues getting it approved. bought and used it when it was finally released. i’ll continue to support the app until i replace my iphone with a touch pro2 in the coming month.

i just cant continue to support apple when they’re being played like a marionette by at&t and stifling innovation. i’ll reactivate my iphone once at&t’s contract expires.

what’s worse is that i’m not even using at&t (i’m on t-mobile) and others like me are still being affected by at&t’s draconian policies that apple is required to enforce and take the blame for.

my only hope is that this is the kindling that causes people to drop support of the iphone, both in development and use, until this issue is resolved. apple cant wait until Verizon migrates to LTE… they need to start talking to T-Mobile in the interim as an iphone on a widespread Verizon LTE network is still 2 years away at best.

  39. Another vote for donation link. Sean will be glad to send a few bucks your way, it’s well deserved.

Question.. Does Apple pulling the plug on this app means SMS push notification will not be possible? Has the Jailbreaking community figure out a way to do Push Notifications outside of Apple system?

  40. All those comments are great in support for GV Mobile, and for Sean. But we need action to solve this crisis.

We all need to call AT&T and Apple customer service to express our discontentment for their decisions.

Cancel our contracts, and use those unlock criPhones with T-Mobile.

Boycott crApple and AT&T products and services.

Complain to the FTC http://www.ftc.gov/ this practice is illigal.

Start a class action lawsuit against crApple and AT&T.

That will surely teach them a lesson for life.

    Together we can.

  41. you don’t need push notifications, if you are running it through a jailbroken method, the only reason push notifications exist is because apple doesn’t let apps run in the background, jailbroken apps can do whatever they want.

  42. GO SEAN!! WHOO FUCKING HOO!

Glad to see you released this on cydia. Contact Saurik, see if you can make it a paid package on cydia! As long as those of us who already paid for it can continue to get updates for free on it, I’m all for you making money!

  43. It is times like this when a carrier and hardware manufacturer take it upon themselves to dictate down to me the application I can and cannot use make me think it is near time to eat the early termination fee and move on from this horrible experience.

One thing going for me is selling my iPhone on ebay should pay for those fees 🙂

  44. I installed it no problem, but it just crashes back to the home screen when I try to open it.. am I missing something? I’m on a 3GS jailbroken with redsn0w; legit activation.

  45. Same problem as Dalton Voss–I uninstalled the previous version, installed the one from Cydia, appears to install properly but crashes back to the home screen. I have a 3G jailbroken with redsn0w and 3.0 firmware.

  46. same problem as Chris and Dalton Voss…i can install it fine, but it keeps crashing after I put in my credentials to log in on first launch. each subsequent launch is still the “first” launch.

iPhone 3G with 3.0 jailbroken with QuickPwn

  47. I have same problem as Abe, Chris and Dalton Voss…i can install it fine, but it keeps crashing after I put in my credentials to log in on first launch. each subsequent launch is still the “first” launch.

iPhone 3G with 3.0 jailbroken with QuickPwn

  48. Same problem here – iPhone 3GS jailbroken with purp1e… crash after attempting to login.

    winterboard/sbsettings/backgrounder/3g unrestricter installed

  49. At the very least, I think you should redo the app without the dialer and SMS and resubmit it to the app store. There’s still a lot of features there that are useful.

  50. Sean, I love how you’ve played this. And by the way, this app installs perfectly and this full version is a lot better than the free one I had before. Thanks again!

  51. Left an outraged comment.

BTW, since you’re working on jailbroken phones now, are you going to work out an update for tighter integration with the OS? Like optionally replace the default SMS with GV SMS? That would rock 🙂

  52. is there ANY way to get this app (happy to pay for it) without jailbreaking the phone? I find I need to do a complete reinstall every couple of months so don’t really want to go down the route of jailbreaking.

I have the GV Free, was going to upgrade this w/e but never got round to it…

on another note – what is the best way to let Apple know how pissed off we are? Calling the call center will certainly annoy people, but it’s too passive aggressive for me.

  53. Thanks Sean for the app. I used the free version (from the app store) before I removed it and installed the Cydia version. This one is the full version and it has lots more options. However it doesn’t remember my credentials so I have to re-enter every time.

  54. I was so mad at Apple and AT&T i jailbroke my phone just to get this app. I almost canceled my iphone and at&t account and take my business to Sprint and a blackberry… Thank You Sean for your hard work!

  55. I just complained to Apple, little it will do. Seriously tempted to go buy a G1 and say to heck with Apple & AT&T. It is the principle of what else will they pull next?

  56. I just left a complaint for Apple, and I never complain. It’s bad enough they’re not allowing 3G for my Slingplayer and Skype, restricting those apps to wi-fi. They’re not actually able to block Google Voice though. All they’re doing is making it a little less convenient to use the service by blocking Apps like this. But given I can call my friend in China for $0.02/minute with Google Voice, vs the rates AT&T charges, I’d go with a little less convenience. Actually, the first workaround I had was a credit card app, until I found GV Mobile. Great app! Glad I installed it before Apple pulled it. Almost enough to make me want to Jailbreak & Unlock my iPhone, which I’ve been resisting.

  57. for those who brought this through the app store, will we get it free in the future if you decide to charge through cydia?

  58. I left apple this feedback:
“It is another black mark for the Apple/AT&T arrangement that such a customer-unfriendly and seemingly random and punitive decision – pulling Google Voice apps, especially GV Mobile – from the App store was made. If the features were such “duplications,” why are we all moaning about it? In fact, the iPhone does NOT allow me to place a call that causes my Google Voice number to display on the phone of the person I’m calling (and therefore be used as a call back number). What a blow to my love affair with my iPhone. I had barely gotten over the diminished cell service after switching to AT&T from Verizon, when you really pulled the rug out from underneath me with this latest move.”

  59. Many, many thanks Sean. I really salute you for doing this. I am now a proud 2G 3.0 user, running your jailbroken GV Mobile App.

One minor issue – I had two missed calls after 12PM Eastern time today. For some reason they show up in the “History” log on the App as both being after 12AM tonight….so they appear at the top of the queue. They appear normally on the GV web UI. All other calls – that took place before and after those – appear normally in the GV Mobile log.

Anyway, you are our new hero! Please know how much we appreciate this, and how much it puts Apple in their place.

  60. Hey Sean,

Man that sucks, I was so mad when I read what happened to GV Mobile, I have the free version on my iPhone and went to buy the full version last night, when I could not find it I looked online and found what happened. Still pissed at Apple!!

I don’t want to Jailbreak my iPhone but I still really want the full version, any chance you will release the code so those of us that want it with out the Jailbreak can just install it out selves, I’m already signed up as a developer so I know how to do this? I’m absolutely willing to pay for it, as if it were still in the app store (like it should be).

    Best of luck with this!!!
    Michael

  61. Apple’s being a bit anti-competitive over this huh? Make sure you add a button for donating on Cydia. I’m sure tons of people would be willing to throw a few bucks your way for doing this for us! Forget the App store, Cydia is the future of the iPhone anyway. Good job man

  62. I sent a complaint to Apple. Here’s what I wrote:

I’d like to report a bug in your application approval process. I remember during one of the iPhone presentations Apple was looking forward to helping developers come up with the next big application. The application that will change how people use their phones.

Well, somehow GV Mobile was removed from the AppStore. So, I figured it was a bug in the business process somewhere and I wanted to report it.

  63. Woohoo! Way to go Sean. I’m glad I got in when I was able to buy a copy and contribute to further development. I look forward to future updates in the cydia side of my phone.

  64. Fantastic, Sean! I’m disappointed that this application wasn’t approved but feel good that you’re able to release it on Cydia.

  65. I downloaded the app through Cydia, but when I open the app and type my username and password an erro note that tel me it is incorrect, is there any place that I need to register first? please help.
    Thank you.

  66. For those of us that bought it through the App Store should we just delete it and download it via Cydia so that we get updates going forward? Pretty sure I know the answer is “yes”, but I thought I’d ask the dumb question.

  67. FYI!!! This app was listed in the repo Cydia Community Sources. That repository wasn’t in my basic install, so after installing it, I found GV Mobile. I installed it and it works great. Thanks Sean!

  68. A naive question perhaps. Will I lose the gv mobile app from my iPod Touch the next time I sync?

Very upsetting it that’s the case. I’ve really come to rely on it.

  69. Sean,
Great job on this app, I am having great success with it. I would like to request a feature. If you could add a favorites tab like in the Phone application on the iPhone, then I could use Google voice to truly replace my phone. Keep up the good work!
    -Ryan

  70. Great job on the app, too bad your work improves the user experience on the iPhone so much. D-bag Apple boasts 50,000 apps available, but I suppose anything more useful then an iFart clone isn’t invited to the party.

    Keep up the good work.

  71. Definitely worth the $2.99! I love it. Glad to hear some updates are coming. (Also glad my phone is jailbroke.) I’ve only noticed a couple minor bugs when composing txt msg’s. Thanks for keeping this available and planning an update.

  72. can we download it via another way beside Cinthy, if you make it available let me know I will be glad to pay for I heard that was a GREAT APP. Thanks for awesome work

  73. hi sean, first of all great app!!

i am using it on my jailbroken phone. i would like to report a few bugs

    1. all my voice messages show 0.0 second, even though i can play them on the website, thus i can’t play them. when i try to delete, it crashes.
    2. history tab – when i try to delete a number, it crashes

i am a beta tester for a few iphone products from ismart dialer to mcleaner.i will be happy to test your product for you.

hope to hear from you soon regarding my issues.

    jc

  74. Sean,
Great job on this app, I am having great success with it. I would like to request a feature. If you could add a favorites tab like in the Phone application on the iPhone, then I could use Google voice to truly replace my phone. Keep up the good work!

  75. Why on earth would you allow an app onto your store and let people pay
for an app like G V Mobile and use it for many months then with no warning
yank it from the store and sight that it does the same thing that the preinstalled
iphone apps do. That is bull. There is no app or feature that is on a out of the box iphone that lets you use Google voice. Just because at&t does not like
that it lets uses send and receive free SMS and call for free well that is there
plan. for you as a hardware/software manufacture to pick and choose what apps people are able to use on the iphone. Do you pick and choose what programs i install on my imac? how about pick and choose what gas i put in my car???
Either be a hardware/software manufacturer or be the app police not both.
Then you wonder why Jailbrakeing a phone is still around. Gee it’s not because of
all the great apps on the apple store. It’s because of all the great apps that are not.

  76. It looks like they changed some things on the back end to stop GV Mobile from working. Going on 3 days for me.. Anyone else seeing this?
