@sean
Currently, I am already backgrounding GV Mobile Paid, it works great to quickly call people, but it still can’t solve the notifications for VM or Text. If GV allowed you to forward texts to emails like they do with VM, this wouldn’t be a problem. I currently forward all my GV VMs to textfree unlimited paid ($5.99 i believe), which gives everyone an email address and supports push. When a VM comes in, I get notified via push with textfree – its great.
I don’t know how big you are compared to textfree (who seems like a small company), but a monthly plan for push is not viable. Because you already have an upperhand on google, you should just raise the price on your app (or release an Professional version) and price it from 5.99 to 9.99. Beejive, textfree, IM+ all have push services without a monthly cost. People WILL pay a higher initial premium but A LOT of people WILL NOT pay monthly.
Gentlemen,
It’s true that a monthly plan for push is not viable; most people will not want to pay for it.
Raising the price of the app is also not a good marketing idea; it will just drive people away from the app no matter what – trust me on this guys. I’d rather sell 1 Million copies of the app @ $.99 instead of 50K copies @ $9.99. The price is right currently.
I would not advise a Cydia version at this time, let just keep everything legit as much as possible.
I believe Sean is already doing the right thing as far as making the app better and better. That’s all he needs to do to keep the app ahead of the competition. That will generate a much larger user base, and definitely more $. You can take that to the nearest bank.
@ranova I agree a monthly plan isn’t what people want, but push for Google voice would require it…Beejive doesn’t have to do much since all IMs are essentially pushed to the client anyway. So they basically log into the person’s account and listen and pass on any IMs that come in…something for Google Voice would have to actively pull the data..so comparing the two isn’t fair.
I have an insider at google that said they have already submitted the iPhone app awhile back but ATT made Apple deny the app because of the free texting – if the google app has push, it basically gets rid of the need of any ATT texting – ESPECIALLY if you already gave everyone your new GV #.
this is a lot different than apps like Textfree, which isn’t the best solution to “free” text, since it requires you to give out your texting “email” while this is pretty much full-blown texting, visual voicemail, and with the right tools – unlimited calling (using gizmo5 + siphon app + gv mobile). You can see why ATT does not want this app to ever come out.
Still, I wouldn’t count on that Google’s version will have push, google doesnt seem to be fully supportive of the iPhone anymore. They have gmail push on a bunch of other phones and not yet on the iPhone. It would be amazing if Google released a separate gmail app with push that has threaded view like you see if you went to gmail.com in your iPhone’s browser.
Not many have GV yet, but even when it does go public, I don’t foresee a lot of people transitioning into a new number, its just a pain in the *** to get everyone to use a new number, unless they HAVE to.
You can’t really blame ATT, if Tmobile really had a say on app approval for the G1myTouch, they probably would put pressure on the new GV app also. Texts are a huge chunk of the carrier’s profits, even though it basically is price gouging.
I’m taking advantage of the ATT iPhone plan as much as I can, by making my GV # call my skypegizmo5 number which I have backgrounded and working over 3g – so basically unlimited minutes for me. Onceif push ever comes out for any GV app and supports text, I’m going to dump my 200 text for $5 feature since it’d be a waste of money. Hell, I’d dump my voice plan if I could!
@ranova How does your “insider friend” at Google know more than every other developer who writes iPhone apps? I promise you that the app reviewing process does not involve Apple disclosing to other companies (even Google) that AT&T has a veto over apps allowed on the app store.
I don’t claim to know because I don’t have an “insider friend,” but I’d bet money that Google has to go through the same BS approval process that every other iPhone App developer has to go through with Apple.
@Maha
Slingplayer. Prime example, was restricted to work only on wifi before getting accepted – this was because of ATT. Don’t believe me if you wish, I gain nothing in spreading any lies…
On a side note: Apple has approved the other Google Voice apps, and the last time I checked they have full support for sms. And Google’s app was rejected for that; there’ no sense in that.
i love this app, however, it seems that gv mobile is impossible for me to send sms outside usa, every-time i key in a number, there is a default #1 country code there. please let me know how to cancel it, or you will change it for version 1.3. thanks
@dice Sending SMS abroad isn’t supported by Google Voice, hence why they say you can’t do it, although we know you can. The next version will open this up, but in the meantime, you can add the international number to your iPhone contacts, and just choose that contact – it works.
@Norman Eventually, at a cost. Others are using Growl + Prowl + Magic + Voodoo + Unicorn to get Push with Google Voice now though…for free – at the expense of leaving your computer on 24/7!

I find the app very useful, and would have gladly paid more for it. I think it’s a valuable tool on my phone. Mostly I do use it for calling people though, and in the rural area where I live internet is very spotty. I really hope the offline dialing issues get worked out so that this can be a possibility. I rarely ever see a 3G network and when on EDGE it can take up to 20 seconds to get past the “signing in” dialog so I can use the app. Offline dialing would make this so much better.
@Jeremy To what “Apps” are you referring? I haven’t seen anything, either on the Google Voice site, or the App Store. If you are referring to the “Google Mobile” app, while it has voice control, it does *not* have any Google Voice support built-in.
Sorry I didn’t clarify. Since google has blackberry and tmobile locked in with there apps. I am sure google will release a iPhone app. I was wondering since your update will outshine what google will produce is apple giving you the run around.

Does anyone know or have tried VoiceCentral vs GV Mobile ?
@alohatofu
I think GV mobile is better. but google will be releasing the voice application soon( hopefully will Push Notification).

if i buy it now will i get free update? or how does it work?
@alohatofu Updates are always free

hey, your app is awesome!!!!!!.
i wanted to ask you, will the update version support push? would the new update be faster?
I sense a new thread is coming up. Great news

prime example Apple is much more strict with companies that are “big” and may add threat. Loopt is out, and does exactly what Latitude does.

Hey sean have you sent your update to apple yet and have they given you a hard time at all? Asking since google has Apps out now.

If I send you my UDID can you send me the file for the last build of GV Mobile which never made it live in the App Store?
@Maha
well…now we know dont we……
