Light at the end of the tunnel

July 31st, 2009

Looks like FCC is getting in the middle of this, demanding answers from Apple, AT&T, and Google regarding the recent situation. According to the letter to Apple, they, like us all, want to know what process is in place for an app to get approved or rejected. Maybe with the FCC’s involvement, Apple will be forced to add the removed apps back to the App Store. If this is the case, I’m going to want lost revenue as well…what the hell, pain and suffering also. Maybe I should have an attorney on hot standby… takers?
Thank you to all 50 or so that sent this in…good looking out!

I really am hoping we get an official Google Voice client from Google.. but also I really just want an answer out of both of the companies (AT&T + Apple)…

I am also a paid user of the GV Mobile app, purchased it four weeks ago and love it! The only down fall I think is that I cant copy/paste SMS’s or edit them while typing a reply.

    Best of luck Sean!

It Appears That This Isnt The Only Thing Going On, Tmobile Users Are Being Denied Access To SMS Messages From Google Voice Numbers, As Of July 30,2009. ITs All Over The Help Forum On Google Voice

Here’s What I Wrote To Google Voice Help Forum

In Regards To The Issue With Tmobile Not Receviving Text Messages…..
What I dont get is why there is such a problem with this service it all seemed to start on july 30th when Apple was supposedly forced by AT&T to remove all applications that run google voice as far as i know there were too, one called GVMobile created by seankovacs and the other was Voice Central and it was created by RiverTurn. The FCC is looking into the fact that apple rejected the ipod touch and iPhone applicationm that google submitted back in early july, and now Tmobile seems to be not recieveing text messages from the google voice service. which pisses me off alot. because after using this service since march i recently made this number my main number and now i cant depend on it as much as before. GOOGLE needs to release a statment on what they are doing and what they know or we need to all contact the Today Show, The Early Show And Good Morning America. and speak towards, APPLE, AT&T and TMobile. Because The Fact that no one has said anything is upseting me.. I give it 3 weeks. and if nothing is done i will need to revert back to my cellphone number which sucks i reaalllllllly like this service CAN SOMEONE PLEASE Reply To Me Or Visit My Website JerseySteve.com and let me know what is going on because this sucks. please google, and all companies involved please say something.. and another thing why would tmobile want to piss off google.. isnt the Google Andriod on tmobile?

Here’s An Article Regarding The Apple Situation With The Service

This very serious matter should go in front of a judge who should:

    1. Compensate the developers for everything allowable by law.
    2. Force apple to remove the restrictions imposed on the iphone, and the
    applications.
    3. Force apple to rewrite their unfair developer’s agreement.

    Isn’t that right?

I hope your app gets back in there. Its a great one!

I’m sure that if Google releases an app, it’ll steal some of your thunder, but at least it will be competition, not removal from market.

I’m glad I bought it (and its the only app I’ve found that’s worth buying so far)!

now that google allows you to port your cell # to google voice.. it absolutely vital that awesome like GV Mobile be made available to the masses. how exactly does AT&T lose revenue with google voice anyway? how many people are dumb/rich enough to call international without a calling card? and it isn’t like calls to your gv voice number are toll free.

Sean, here’s hoping a happy resolution in your favor comes soon. However, with all due respect, don’t be too quick to publicly consider retribution or compensation. If your app does reappear in the App Store, you will likely enjoy lots of sales due to the groundswell of new interest in GV due to all the publicity.

    @uday
Part of it is from people using GV to text freely (disabling forwarding). However, this is a tenuous argument because apps are on the store that do just this. Oh, I don’t know, one named “Text Free” comes to mind hahah.

  13. July 31st, 2009 at 23:22

Good luck Sean, like you are hope to see all these apps reinstated. Also hope the door will be open to getting approvals faster and for other apps they neutered or rejected.

The joke is that if the FCC investigation opens up the App Store it could well be that it will help Apple and the iPhone!

This is great news, I hope the outcome will be favorable. As a paid user of GV Mobile, I have found it to be very useful. I hope that I will be able to continue to receive updates and use this, as well as possibly the official Google App, without having to jailbreak my iPhone, which I have been successful at being able to avoid so far…

Really, you should just keep your comments to yourself. Sean’s app is a great one given that google has not released APIs for voice yet. You posting here takes nothing away from Sean’s work or credibility and only makes yourself look childish.

On the legal front…talk to someone at EFF first (415-436-9333)…it’s always best to try the free route first. If they don’t want to help you, call me (it shouldn’t be too hard for you to find my phone number) and I’ll try to find someone that will.

  24. August 1st, 2009 at 18:38

What Sean Should Do Is Design Google’s Application!,

If This Situation Gets Resolved, and gv mobile does go back, and google’s app does go in the app store as well i will continue to use gvmobile unless google’s has push notifications.

What happened to the update that you submitted to apple? Is it still being submitted to cydia? Or are things on the burner for a while?

  34. Elvis
    August 3rd, 2009 at 19:45

Just a note to all: I’m a lawyer, and though I don’t have any experience with the FCC, I have experience with enforcement actions by the FTC. I can tell you that the biggest hurdle *by far* is getting the feds to pay any attention to your complaint. Letters like this are not formalities–they’re looking seriously at Apple’s behavior here. You can bet that the sh!t hit the fan at 1 Infinite Loop when that letter arrived, and that Apple’s lawyers are pulling some all-nighters this week to respond to it. No way to know if the FCC will actually do anything, but it’s definitely a start.

bummer. I could care less about push. I was hoping for a badge for unread/ un listened to sms/voicemails and missed calls. And some way to play a voicemail should you not hear it correctly the first time without having to respring the phone

If you all have a laptop that is running most of the time, Growl for Windows has a pretty great GreaseMonkey script for Google Voice that pushes you SMS notifications using the iPhone app, Prowl. Can also use it to push you notifications for incoming Skype calls, great since I have GV forward calls to Skype. http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/

  41. Flix
    August 24th, 2009 at 04:31

Since the FCC asked for a list of rejected (or pulled) GV-related apps and their respective developers’ info, we were wondering if they contacted you and/or whether you plan to contact them in case they don’t? If that “Raymond C” conversation screenshot is real, the feds would be delighted to hear about it.

As expected, both Apple’s and AT&T’s responses turned out to be horse manure and these two really should start eating up some.

  42. Flix
    August 24th, 2009 at 04:47

But you have to give it to AT&T for sending you the horse, directly:

“2(a). Did Apple consult with AT&T in the process of deciding to reject the Google Voice application?”

    “No.”

I mean… seriously? Not even a complete sentence? In fact, that “No” sounded more like “No, and let’s leave it at that.”

  43. October 25th, 2009 at 13:54

how on earth is this not a demonstrable lie?

“Question 1. Why did Apple reject the Google Voice application for iPhone…”

“Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application, and continues to study it. ….”

So it’s not “rejected,” it was just approved, made available through the app store, and then removed. But not rejected? Eh?
