Line2 falls prey to recent Google Voice hoopla

August 4th, 2009

My good buddies over at toktumi have this wonderful app called Line2 just waiting to get approved by Apple. If Google Voice is too childish for you and you need more business centric features, this is the service for you. Better yet, you can get the service NOW – no invites. They have an app available for the Blackberry now, one for Android coming soon, and one for the iPhone, pending Apple approves it. Jason over at TechCrunch wrote up a nice article of the ongoing saga – check it out Another Startup Falls Prey To The iPhone/Google Voice Crossfire.

Maybe I had a small hand in getting this app up and running… :)

    My company has a lot of iPhone floating around and I know this would be a huge hit with most of the sales force. I truly believe the rumor of Apple looking to bring GV-like functionality to MobileMe and are crippling GV and others like Sean in preparation of this. I mean who can really justify $99 a year for a push Gmail hack, crappy online storage and a “Find My Phone” function”? Then again, who can justify paying $99 for a Apple GV ripoff when GV is free? Perhaps iPhone integration, but then again I’ll most likely just move to Android then…that HTC Hero does look pretty fancy…

    I feel lucky I was able to get GV Mobile the day before, yes the day before, it was pulled and was looking forward to further updates. I guess once I get my broken iPhone replaced I’ll be jailbreaking once again. All the best of luck Sean.

    @Ian
    Hello. Where are you hearing or seeing this rumor about some type of Google Voice like feature in Apple’s MobileMe?

    Thanks

    Is there a way I can get the 1.21 version w/o jail braking the unit? Like coping it into the App folder in iTunes?
    If so, please send me a link, I did down the full version because the lite version did not have all the functions of the full version so i paid for the full version via the Apps Store. Thanks and keep in the good work.

    @Richard Pardue
    Apps that aren’t approved by Apple for the App Store cannot be installed using iTunes. The only way to install apps not approved by Apple is to jailbreak the unit. You can thank Apple for that.

    The Toktumi service/app is virtually identical to RingCentral, which is still in the app store. Why does RongCentral get special treatment. Note that I am not complaining… I’m a RingCental customer and longtime fan. I just don’t get why the competition is being stifled. Although… there is an AT&T branded version of RingCentral… maybe an acqusition is in the works?

    Hi Sean, I believe you had one of the most aesthetically pleasing colors of blue on your original icon. The newer jailbreak icon is hideous. I think in your next update, a nice feature would be if we could save multiple usernames and switch between them easier. Thank you for being real. I hope Apple is forced to sell your product again. It was one of the only apps that I felt obligated to buy.

    newber is another useful app that doesnt really fall into the categories listed that has been receiving the shit end of the apple stick for over a year with a simple, incredibly useful app. This app is solely based around forwarding calls and has been not denied, not reject, but just ignored in the queue.

    apple, you fucking suck. I thought you had a spine.

    @Be Rad I don’t remember where I heard the rumor, but it might actually give MobileMe some actual value so I think it has some validity.

    Hey man I love the app, I got it on cydia, the only problem is that the SMS makes it crash. I have an iphone 3gs, running 3.0.1

    I hate when the “Think Different” company insults the intelligence of it’s own customers. Apple is doing it right now from their own webpage. They must be really concerned about the FCC. Apple claims they are still reviewing the Google Voice App and NEVER actually refused it. What actually happened is that Apple removed ALL the Google Voice Apps from the App Store, including the excellent GV Mobile, which had been accepted weeks prior. In the case of GV Mobile, the acceptance had come from Phil “Keynote Address” Schiller himself.

    What ends up happening is both developer and customer get screwed. The developer gets screwed when the customer requests a refund from Apple, which unfortunately, will be paid right out of developer’s pockets. This will come after many months of coding and testing, AND finally getting the application approved from a senior-level Apple executive. The customer is getting screwed because even if they choose to keep the software (which I will – thank you Sean) it will never be properly updated and will eventually obsolete itself.

    Apple claims they don’t want duplicate functionality (really?) because it might confuse the end-user. Let us hope they don’t try this tactic on their Macintosh platform, else you’ll never be able to use a software application that might compete with (or is that be confused with?) an established Apple application. God knows having access to both those word processors might confuse the hell out of you. Don’t think this could happen? Go talk to the folks that developed the Netscape browser back in the day.

    What this is really about is control; Apple’s and not yours. It is about limiting your options, and stifling innovation; all for the sake of the almighty buck. I think Apple is confused if they don’t understand that their customers (and the FCC) know EXACTLY what is happening here. It won’t be tolerated, nor will this issue go away until Apple fixes it.

    TechCrunch wrote an excellent piece that far more eloquently than could I, rebuts most of the complete nonsense in Apple’s response to the FCC. – It is required reading. – The Truth: What’s Really Going On With Apple, Google, AT&T And The FCC – http://shar.es/T95M
