September 1st, 2009

Next week I’m on vacation (staycation) – maybe I’ll finish up version 2.0? ;)

I hope you have a great “Staycation” and hope 2.0 comes get completed.

Will 2.0 have the ability to launch without connecting? I am currently using backgrounder to speed up the launch but it’s kind of buggy with the new firmware.

Are you planning on adding a url scheme for use with Prowl?

    Hi sean,
is there a way to have prowl redirect to GV Mobile? The latest prowl version has app redirects depending on the type of notification, but GV Mobile is not one of them.

Also, for those of you who want GV push notifications without having to keep your computer one 24/7; check out http://www.gvmax.com – works great with prowl!

    Line2 APPROVED by Apple! WTF?

I mean I know you were a part of it Sean so this really blows my mind how a more or less business version of Google Voice can be used on the iPhone as an app but actual Google Voice cannot?

    MAKE UP YOUR MIND APPLE!

Version 2, sweet!! Let us know what new features are coming out so I can cry tears of joy.

    Line2 is approved, interesting.

Line2′s interface is identical to GV Mobile, so Line2 alters the iphone the same way Google Voice does; we all know that’s crap.

It’s clear that apple has lost its mind, and that will cost them millions of customers, and fans.

This is a mistake apple will not be able to fix, and will not get away with. I predict they should start laying off people soon as business declines over this.

I wonder if the line2 approval is a result of the FCC microscope. I wonder what the prospects of trying to get GV Mobile back on the App Store so that those of us who don’t wish to jailbreak can take advantage of the updates?

How do you still get GV Mobile? Can you download it from the website?

GV Mobile is available through Cydia (ModMyi source) for jailbroken iPhones.

    @Sean
Should we subscribe to GV Max or something similar. Or will GV mobile Ver. 2.0 have a solution to this?

I need help!!! I was wondering if the “phone to ring” on the paid version and the “phone number to call from” on the free version both NOT tied to your google voice account?? I am asking because I thought you were able to put in any number you wanted your google number to ring when you place a call but when I try on either the only number allowed to do that is the number tied to my google voice account.

I am also wondering why my free version is not working AT ALL when I try and place a call. It keeps giving me an error message saying “Google voice refused to make the call…” I have an 2g iphone jailbroken running firmware 2.2. Is the free version update only compatible with firware 3.0? I have referred to the support page on Sean’s website about this error message:

I have rebooted, I have tried and succeed in making calls thru the website and sending an text. But I cant thru my phone or itouch both running firmware 2.2. Any help would be very appreciated. It is a great app I have used since day one. Thanks

Sean, your app saves the day and I’m very excited a new version is coming out!

There’s one aesthetic thing that bugs me, but maybe it’s just me–esp because I have to use EDGE most of the time. When I’m waiting for SMS or History or Voicemail to load, that spinning wheel just makes me remember that I’m waiting. Really, I’d prefer not being reminded that I’m waiting by watching a moving wheel that keeps my attention. :) Safari, for example, just has a blank screen, so while I wait, I think of/do something else. The GV mobile spinning wheel keeps my attention on the fact that I’m waiting, and doesn’t offer any indication of how much longer it will be–which [at least to me] only detracts from the user’s experience. Perhaps you could just have a classy, unmoving screen that says: SMS or Voicemail or History in the center while it’s loading instead?

Just a thought–maybe others feel different–or likely for others with steady wifi/3G everywhere, the wait time is negligible.

No matter, the spinning wheel is no deal-breaker! Your app is a winner, Sean!

    Thanks again!

I was hoping for maybe cacheing SMS/History/voicemail listings and allowing the app to open directly to the dialer, and open the cached versions of the other pages and let the updates and logging in happen in the background indicated by a twirling icon in the upper left corner maybe.

There is also a bug where I can’t select type in an sms as I’m typing it unless it’s the first SMS in a conversation. It’s like the app focuses on the conversation bubbles and not the text box I’m typing in.

Oh and of course the URL scheme so prowl can forward to it!

Sean, considering that Line2 and the Vonage app have been accepted, do you think its worth resubmitting GVMobile?

Have a great one – sent you a email with offering of services, let me know if I can help.

Man! I was sure Apple’s rock and roll event was gonna close with an on stage Kovacs-Jobs handclasp with GV Mobile 2.0 rolled into firmware 3.1! Sean you had the vacation excuse lined up and everything!

Anyways, I think your 2.0 release will have more practical effect for me than the whole Apple event. Can you share the latest, Sean?

All, this seems to be the fastest, safest and most secure way of auto-ushing the SMS alert via Growl/Prowl with you own computer always on:

    Just tried it–works great!

Sean. Thank you so much. A few suggestions-

save username & pw info & select from a dropdown list

choose which screen to open into

    ability to add contacts

    contact syncing?

Since it’s a JB app, maybe have an extra package tweak that changes the ‘text message’ button in the standard contact list to text the # with GV Mobile?

Another tweak which redirects the stock calling with GV Mobile..

I mean, Apple denied you, and makes you pay for refunds? I wouldn’t show any loyalty, I’d take over their device.

Nice Sean, I don’t really have any reccomondations on ur app other than, if possible, go back to the icon u had for the AppStore version, it was pretty sweet. Other than that great app, hope ur still getting donations for the cydia version. U should seriously make some public comments about apple and all the bull they’re done to you, just in a less imposing tone so that u can steal everyone’s hearts. Have a nice staycation.

  36. September 21st, 2009 at 06:10

Awesome news that you’re working on a new release Sean. I’ve just embarked on a long stay abroad where Google Voice has become much more central to my communications, and GV Mobile now isn’t able to authenticate for me, so I’m especially looking forward to it :-) Hope your vacation was/is renewing :-)

@Jake Your UI work is killer!

Poll: how many times a day do you think you can check this post, and still consider yourself healthy? ;)

Anybody else anxious (…even a little frustrated?) for news on this, of any kind?

I can’t find any helpful update anywhere on the internet (google/Sean’s website/forum/twitter), & no response to an email inquiry over a week ago.

I don’t wish to simply complain, I’ve made other upbuilding comments as well. Besides, he’s clearly busy (has a life–this is amazingly a side hobby for him!), but…having communication/feedback builds good sentiment, while not having any, well, doesn’t.

  49. Ryan

    @Clint
[rumor-squash]. His twitter says v1.22 should be out tonight (?) on Cydia, so project is seemingly NOT dead.

Not sure if v1.22 is different than v1.2.2 (extra decimal), but the Changelog on Cydia says 1.2.2 was released July 28, 2009. He said earlier today on Twitter that tonight’s new version (v1.22) is to correct the invalid credentials error.

v2.0 is “to follow”. So, there’s our longed-for progress update.

Has any one updated GV Mobile on Cydia. I did, and I did not see any changes. One problem though, when you open GV Mobile it prompts you for your user name and password. That’s okay, the problem is when you respring your iphone, the app forgets about your user name and password and you have to input it again. Anyone else having this issue?
