GV Mobile v2.0 b5

December 25th, 2009

So, why has it been like 4-5 months for an update? I do have good reasons I wish to keep off the interweb, but others include the fact that Apple burst my damn bubble. Also, I re-wrote the whole thing. :) Anyway, I’m taking a limited amount of beta testers to give v2.0 a run through. Just send me your UDID# and I’ll send you the latest beta shortly (after I wake up). Not everyone will get a beta copy, sorry. So, initial plans are to put this on Rock/Cydia store @ $1.99 and eventually App Store. I’m still pounding out new features and should be completed sometime this weekend, pending everything goes well (and adding back stuff missing). Screen shots below… oh, as always, GV Mobile can access your iPhone contacts – otherwise you’d use the mobile site. ;)

Does this mean apple will let you back in the app store?

Looks awesome. Would love to see it on the App store again so it can support push.

However, if this is allowed back on I think we will see Google’s own software on there since they did develop Google Voice for the iPhone just it was denied.

Actually what I would like to see is to get Google Voice SMS to work on the native iPhone SMS app and for the GV Voicemail to also work on the native iPhone VM app.

Check out VVM Global, http://www.vvmglobal.com/about.php. It seems promising if it ever comes out. Maybe you could figure a way for GV to work as this does?

@ryan Thanks man. I’ve emailed it to Sean.

    @Marvin
No, he said Cydia Store and RockYouriPhone or whatever that service is called nowadays.

I look forward to beta-testing! I’m tired of SMS not having auto-push… :(

    December 26th, 2009 at 01:05

So by this weekend you will have it in Cydia or by this weekend you will have it out for beta testing?

  14. December 26th, 2009 at 08:57

    @JT beta testing…

  15. December 26th, 2009 at 10:17

I originally bought GV Mobile when it was still in the app store — I’d love to beta test this app if possible. Going to send you an email now.

  16. December 26th, 2009 at 11:11

@sean Have you sent out any beta invites yet?

Pirated the instant it comes out.

Hah, thinking you can make people pay for mobile apps…

  19. December 26th, 2009 at 15:38

    It’s already leaked? WTF?

  21. December 27th, 2009 at 01:06

Does this mean there won’t be any more support for GV 1.x? I understand you that you should be rewarded for your work, but it’s next to impossible for me to pay for an app.

Can you please add push support for SMS notifications if your going to submit this through apple. if your going to stay with the jailbroken way, then i guess this is not possible. please consider, it would allow me to have true texting on my ipod like how an iphone user can.

  23. December 27th, 2009 at 01:48

For anybody who want instant notification of their Google Voice texts, try this out and let me know:

“For iPod touch/iPhone users: to truly mimic a real texting plan, have Google Voice forward SMS messages to your Gmail, then set up Gmail with a filter to forward all texts to your Textfree email address. The Textfree iPhone application has a lite version that is free of charge and supports free unlimited incoming texts. If you turn on push notifications for Textfree, any incoming Google Voice SMS will be routed to your textfree email address and provided that you have wifi or 3G access, you would get instant notification of new texts without having to check your email.”

You mentioned that you would first release the new GV mobile app in the Cydia and Rock apps and then, hopefully, in the full blown app store. Does this mean that, if we bought GV mobile 2.0 during it’s cydia/rock phase, we have to buy it again when it comes to the app store? I don’t mind paying for a decent app, but I don’t want to have to pay twice. How’s this gonna work?

  25. Josh K.
    December 27th, 2009 at 08:39

I can’t understand why anyone would complain about paying $2. I mean, it’s only $2 people! The app store has really made the whole lot of you into really cheap whiners.

  26. phreakwenci
    December 27th, 2009 at 15:46

So wait, you’re saying that even tho I’ve actually pai for the app twice (once in the first beta, and then again in the app store) I have to pay a 3rd time? Sean I dig your product but not enough to pay for it 3 times. A $2 app would then become a $6 app. You should offer free upgrades to those of us who’ve been with you from the beginning. Our numbers shouldn’t hurt your business

    December 27th, 2009 at 16:02

    @Gruntparty

I think this can be done without the App store. Rock displays a badge notification when there are new update. It runs extentions in the background.

  28. Stan
    December 27th, 2009 at 18:38

If you want push support, go to gvmax.com there is a lite and a paid version that you can use. The paid version runs off your own google apps account and will serve you well. I love it and push is a non-issue for me now.

Why can’t the offline dialing feature use the pound sign (#) on the jailbroken phones?

I understand leaving the restriction in the AppStore submission for approval reasons. However, it shouldn’t be an issue via Cydia, right?

  30. 4JustinB
    December 28th, 2009 at 02:15

Oh yeah, and for the love of all that is holy and sacred, *PLEASE* stay away from Rock!

Their RockApp is horrible and causes so many issues! Everyone should boycott those clowns.

Cydia just works and doesn’t embed into the applications and Saurik doesn’t ask for much. This is especially true when you consider Apple’s take in the AppStore.

    December 28th, 2009 at 12:02

Thanks Sean, I’m looking forward to the upgrade. I hope it makes it to the store – the lack of Google Voice support by the iPhone was a major reason I dropped AT&T. I would consider signing up again if this was approved.

Anyone unable to pay $2 for an app really, really needs to take a look at their finances. How much are you paying for your monthly phone service? And you can’t afford $2?

  32. pennywaltz
    December 28th, 2009 at 13:58

$2 isn’t bad. But one thing for me is that I brought GV 1 back in the app store, so I am not really motivated to buy it again.

Will V2.0 have badge number notification for new SMS Mssgs or missed calls?

  35. Bryce
    December 28th, 2009 at 17:21

I’m curious. How do you use the multiple GV accounts feature if you can’t forward multiple GV accounts to a single cell phone number?

So, now that you got my hopes up and then crushed them with a single post, when will you actually be releasing this. Anytime in the near future. You have been working on it for over 6 months. I mean come on. “2.0 coming out on Christmas” my ass.

  38. Gotlactose
    December 28th, 2009 at 19:35

To those looking down upon those complaining about the price tag, I too would gladly pay $2 for the application. However, I don’t have access to the method of payment to buy the app. If I could meet up with him in person and give him $2 cash (or even more), I would, but I just can’t do it over the air.

My question is, is it possible to have a daemon running in the background to allow alerts (push)? I ask because other jailbroken apps allow this. Such as Longitude, and even Rock does when there are updates. The new 2.0 looks awesome and what could make it better is some type of push system. Or a way to allow we can tell it to check every minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, etc…such as what Longitude does with updates and allowing us to choice the update interval.
