GV Mobile + on Cydia

It’s out folks. Go consume it and enjoy. It’s on the ModMyI repo.
Thanks to Kyle and Jay for getting this all set up.

What are the changes you ask:

Well, first, it cost money. Yeah, I know, I hear ya – but everything in life isn’t free.

Changes/Updates:
+Favorites
+New tab system for Contacts, Favorites, Keypad
+Landscape SMS
+Call & Add Contact from SMS main view
+International support for SMS (until Google blocks it)
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from History
+Voicemail transcriptions, new voicemail screen layout
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from Voicemail
+Local archiving of voicemail (doesn’t download every time)
+Offline dialing (via dialing GV #)
+Default Area code (for those that don’t need to dial the area code in you area)
+More data sync options (Interval, Startup, Startup on demand, manual)
+Multiple Accounts
+User selectable tab to open to
+More Google Settings : Do Not Disturb, Call Screening, Call Presentation
+The core of the updates reside in the back end programming of the app – completely rebuilt from ground up.

Update:

Two quick things:

1) The icon is squared, but OS does round it. I can assure you something 3rd party is turning this off. However, I will update it.
2)The icon shifted up, down, left, right. See 1. I can’t fix this because if I manually shift the graphic up in the PNG, it will be shifted up for all those that don’t have this issue. I’ve had beta testers install via a legal ways (Adhoc) and I’ve installed it via Cydia and another method and the icon is simply fine.

If someone can educate me on #2, that would be great.

  1. HIP HIP HOOORAY!. Love the new contacts system, the VM Transcriptions and new url scheme (now if Prowl would just add it to their list). Being able to finally move my cursor to edit typos I made in the middle of a sms is very nice also ;)

Thanks again Sean! Now… when are we getting 3.0? (j/k)

  2. So what’s the word on if we pay for this one and later an app store version is released? I’m guessing the app store version would be the one receiving updates if that happened, so would you do something for us like give everyone who bought on Cydia a code for a free download?

  3. Congrats on the getting this out successfully! I honestly hope that Apple approves it for you too! There are tons of peeps that don’t know or won’t jailbreak and it would be good to let them take part in this fun too!

  4. Looks good. I’ve been looking forward to this. However, the icon is very square and doesn’t really look like an iPhone app icon. It also continues to be a pixel or two lower than other app icons. Other than that it seems to be working well!

  5. I guess I lucked out. It’s performing like a champ for me. Thank you, Sean…

Feature request: I can has ‘Remaining Balance: $XX.XX’ over the dialer? When I’m making international calls? That would be SO NICE.

  6. @Erik Shoot me an email, no? What if I don’t read these comments? Give me some more details in an email – what did you do before you closed it, what does it show when you open.

  7. I would LOVE to buy the new GV Mobile + from Cydia, but there’s one problem. Google Checkout won’t let me allow Cydia. There seems to be a problem with either the HTML/CSS on the verification page, or it’s the way Cydia renders it. The bottom line is I can’t touch the “Allow” button. See the pic below. Anyone else have this problem?

    http://bit.ly/5D1chC

  8. This is awesome. Seems faster. The ability to edit SMS and having voicemail transcripts took care of the only two (small) issues I had with it before. Thank you!! Hope Apple wises up and allows this for you.

  9. Yeah, already paid $3 for it in the app store, don’t really wanna pay for it again on cydia and then again on the app store if it ever makes it back in. I think I’ll wait.

  10. For some reason it keeps thinking that I have unread SMSes when I launch it, so it vibrates. Then it auto-updates and the “new messages” go away. When I quit and relaunch, same thing happens.

  11. offline = no use of wifi or 3G to place calls.

With the original app you need to be online in order to use the app to place a call.
If you don’t have a data plan/3G (iphone on T-Mobile) and you are in a place where there is no access to wifi, offline mode comes in handy, instead of manually dialing you google voice number and then the phone number you wish to call.

  12. @Ole
Offline dialing requires… patience… to say the least. It’s not really the app’s fault, since apple doesn’t let developers dial the # key, so the app is forced to wait until Google decides to automatically connect the call ~10sec.

I assume, however, that if the app is rejected from the app store (not that anyone is wishing for that) Sean would get rid of this limitation, since he would no longer have to kowtow to Apple’s (idiotic) rules.

  13. if it is a matter of patience I can live with it, no problem there.
I just don’t to write down a phone number I need to call from my contacts, dial GV first, input my password, press 2 and then dial the phone number I just wrote down on a piece of paper.

  14. I wonder whether someone could write a tiny extension that just dials the # key after GV+ dials the number. That way GV+ would still playing by the rules, and only us naughty jailbroken folks would have the ability to dial offline quickly.

  15. would it work if the phone number is saved in the contacts folder with the # extension at the end, right after the last digit of the phone number?

  16. @JMR Maybe you have some old old unread sms or vm’s? The initial load pulls all/any unread…while the stuff that displays only grabs the first 15 or so sms or vm’s.

  17. @Marty I don’t blame ya…but I guess if you think about it, you probably spend more on a coffee or fast food. Err, well at least I do. :) We’ll see what next week brings us…

  18. @sean
Having to wait 10 seconds means nothing to me. I use an old Motorola phone so I am used to a long process of dialing 2 phone numbers to place a phone call.
My wife has an iphone which has the first version of GV mobile.

If it all comes down to 10 seconds in order to be able to use the app offline, I’ll (she’ll) deal with it.

  19. I LOVE it. Seriously smitten again. Makes life so much easier. BUt what is with the icon? It was too small before; now it’s all square. It makes everything else look wonky. Still; it flies.

Sean, is there a way to split it up so I have SMS and Phone in two separate apps? Or what appear to be separate icons?

  20. Have you addressed the SMS sorting/order? Google Voice has a really terrible way of grouping messages together (not sorted by contact then time received like everywhere else).

  21. Congratulations! I was a user of the original app store version, and I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time! That said — I’m a little nervous about buying the new version, because of a problem I had before. I’m still using my original 2G iPhone. In the past, when I tried to initiate a call over EDGE using GVM, I wouldn’t get a ring. GV *was* calling, but it was going straight to my regular voicemail. Unfortunately, GV couldn’t tell that I hadn’t actually picked up, so the poor call recipient would hear their phone ring, pick up, and be greeted with silence. Later, I’d get the voicemail of the whole thing — the phone ringing, the person picking up, the “hello? hello?” and finally the click. My theory was that this was because the 2G iPhone can’t do voice and cellular data at the same time, and GV Mobile was still occupying that data connection when the GV call came in. I noticed the disclaimer in your Cydia description about weak connections, so I wonder if this is what you were referring to? Thanks, and again congrats. :)

  22. @Jesse Yeah…that kinda is it. I see this problem as well..so it’s not just you. I just cant do too much about it as its like something with the Edge. By the time you answer your incoming GV #, the app is closed. So I’m just not sure.. :(

  23. Hello,

When I use the app, it doesn’t seem to work correctly.

For example, when I dial, it just says ‘Dialing…”, then it goes back. I am connected to wifi, and I tried it over 3G as well.

Also, when I send an SMS, nothing ever is received on the other phone.

    I am on a jailbroken 3GS, running 3.1.2.

    Thx!

  24. Disregard above comment regarding SMS. However, it seems like I have to try 10+ times to make a call. Anything I can tweak on my end?

  25. So got it, thanks, big improvements. Quick question, been using prowl to open gv mobile, had to edit the plists for prowl to allow this. Is there a way to open SMS or Voicemail tabs from the prowl command line? Thanks!

  26. @sean, I zoomed in to hide my e-mail address :) but I have GV Mobile + now and am really loving the landscape SMS. Great update!
@Anonymous, thanks, I didn’t even see the Reload button.

  27. @sean, I noticed a few things so far. When I try to set a ringtone for a contact I’m stuck on that page because there is no Save or Back button so I have to quit the app. Next, I prefer the old behavior of immediately displaying the contact’s phone number in the dialer (if he has only one number) instead of making me click his only number after I already clicked his name. Finally, I miss the Dial On Click option in settings from the old version (or I just can’t find it?) because I don’t like it when GV Mobile starts dialing automatically if I accidentally clicked the wrong contact. None of these issues really bother me. I don’t even set individual ringtones, but I’m sure other people do and they might not like getting stuck on that screen. Everything else is wonderful :) Excellent work!

  28. Sean, I mean you got my 2$ but I love that your app was free before. I am going to have to say I wish you went with a rounded Icon for the App Icon. No bugs so far with my install on a 3GS.

  29. Hey Sean. The new version looks great. Thank You for it. However I have a question about a feature you removed which is a bit disappointing and forcing me to continue to use the old version. In the original version, the user could choose which phone number to ring in addition to which number to forward to. New version only offers a setting for which number to forward to. I had a very specific use for this and now with only having the number to forward to feature, I have to either 1) change my inbound routing frequently or 2) change which phone number to ring from GV via web. I can explain my detailed the usage of GV with multiple IAX and SIP trunks but do not want to write a book here.

Is there a reason why you did not leave this in?

Update: Nevermind. Sorry. I overlooked that it is still there just missed it.

  31. Just so I’m not missing something, is the multiple account support so that you can use other GV accounts for the SMS/History/Voicemail functions in the app only? You can’t send/receive calls from multiple GV accounts with the same forwarding phone…

  32. sean :
@qwertypo there are url handlers..i posted on the site weeks ago

Works like a charm. I added these to prowl redirect list, and I have the option of opening either tab, thanks

    Display
    GV Voicemail
    Key
    gv voice
    URL
    gvm://vm

    Display
    GV SMS
    Key
    gv sms
    URL
    gvm://sms

  33. Setting a phone-to-ring as ‘Gizmo phone’ consistently crashes the app..

Bummer, as I wanted to use the app to dial out via my Gizmo ATA to avoid GV 3-minute limit.. Hope this is fixed soon.

  34. @sean Maybe you could implement some kind of relay/delay for sending the message to the GV servers? If the app made the request to GV through an intermediary maybe that would give it enough time to disengage with the EDGE data connection?

  35. Hey Sean,

Great work on the app and thanks for your hard work. However, I must ask what made you decide to NOT include push notification in this update? …or I missing something and it is?

    Thanks!

    jeremy

  36. @Jeremy
indeed, gv mobile + would first have to be approved by Apple’s App Store first before official push notification service would be allowed. However, there are alternative push service ways. Personally I have gmail forward my sms’s to my Textfree account, then turn on push for Textfree. it won’t load the proper app when opening to reply, but it does show the sender info and a preview of the message. :)

I am using VoiceGrowl, and Prowl to push notify for SMS and Voicemail, and thanks to the URL handlers, it loads the proper page

  38. Thanks Illixer (and outphase), I actually have the exact same work around configured now, I was just hoping to simplify…Here’s hoping for app store approval!

    Thanks!

  39. A quick couple of questions about the new version before I replace the old…

#1 – Can the previous version remain installed when installing the new GV Mobile+?

#2 – In the SMS screen, is there still a limit to the amount of SMS conversations it will load? The previous (free) version limited it to 15 conversations (I believe.)

Also, I believe it was mentioned in the past but is there any way that GV Mobile could access the Google Voice contacts (saved in the Google Voice account)? It be super useful…

Thanks for the update & for all your hard work!

  40. I was quite happy with GV Mobile 1 and didn’t see any real reason to upgrade. 1 did everything I needed and it did it well. However, i figured that since I would be willing to pay for that I might as well buy the new version, if for no other reason than to support the developer.
Sean, I hope you are able to continue improving this great product. Thanks!

  41. The best push notification system I’ve seen yet is to use Prowl. Prowl will push growl notifications to your iPhone, but it also has support for third party services. I currently have a Python script running on my computer that pushes SMS and Vociemail notifications to Prowl. There are also free 3rd party services that will do this for you as well. Prowl then has the ability to forward you to GV Mobile+ automatically.

So on my phone when I get an SMS I get a notification just like a native SMS. Prowl then opens up but immediately quits and opens GV Mobile+ directly to the SMS page.

With GV Mobile + and Prowl it’s pretty close to having native support for Google Voice :)

  42. Is no one else using the app called Notifications made by Conovae http://www.appnotifications.com ? It’s only $2.99 but gives you an e-mail address and 20,000 free notifications ($0.99 per 10,000 after that). There is no hassle with running Growl on your personal computer 24/7. It’s always on and very quick to forward notifications. You just set Google Voice to forward SMS to the e-mail it provides. I e-mailed the developer yesterday, and he’s already submitted an update to his app that integrates with the new GV Mobile + URL schemes to launch directly to the SMS tab (or voicemail tab) when you receive a text notification. There is also a nice API interface that allows you to send customized notifications via curl, which is pretty cool.

  43. @Dan

Dan, in the Prowl settings there is a button to update the list of redirection apps. It will pull down a list from the developer. If there is something that you want that isn’t on the list you can probably request it on their forum. The developer is pretty open to suggestions. GV Mobile+ is already in the list :)

  44. Is 2.0 going to be available on Rock or do I need to switch to Cydia? I’ve been using the free one from Rock up until now

  45. Hi Sean..

I just bought the latest version of your app via Cydia and every time I click on the history tab it crashes. No idea what the problem may be. When I click the history tab in the old version of your app (still loaded) it loads just fine and doesn’t crash. Any ideas? I’ve rebooted my phone. Also, would love to figure out the icon problem many are describing. I can tell you my particular phone may be jailbroken, but I have no themeing installed (no mobilesubstrate or anything of the sort).

    Thank you.

  46. Thanks for all your hard work and for a wonderful tool that is both innovative and cost-efficient..!!

    Will be getting this ASAP..!!

  47. Just noticed.. not only does it crash when I goto the History tab.. the “Speaker Off/On” button in the Voicemail tab also doesn’t work as its suppose to be default. It defaults to “Speaker Off” .. which I would assume means that my Voicemail should be blaring out of the Speakerphone (which only makes sense), but in fact the audio is coming out of the ear speaker (unacceptable). When I hit the “Speaker Off” button (so that it says Speaker On) the audio is still coming out of the ear speaker … it’s not until I hit the button again (so that it once again says Speaker Off) that audio comes out of the Speakerphone. For a very short voicemail, this process results in me NOT EVEN HEARING the voicemail. :(

    So three issues going forward…….
#1: Tapping the History tab crashes the program. When you relaunch you had better hit another tab before the app crashes, otherwise the next time you launch it will just crash again (unless you see default tab to something other than “Last”)
#2: Voicemail speaker on/off button doesn’t act as it should
#3: Square icon that is misaligned (despite not having any third party theming packages like mobilesubstrate/etc loaded.

    Any ideas Sean?

  48. Michael, have you tried to reinstall? Someone else mentioned that their problems, different from yours, were solved after removing and reinstalling.

  49. Sean,

    LOVE THE APP! ALWAYS HAVE!

I bought it from the App Store, followed it over to the Jailbroken community, and I’m proud to let my money invest into a worthwhile app once again.

Here’s the thing. I’m a iPod Touch user. I wish I was on an iPhone, but right now it’s not within the realm of my budget. Listening to voicemails on my 1G iPod Touch NEVER works on GV Mobile+.

    Any tips?

    THANKS A BAZILLION TIMES!

  50. Love the update and was happy to pay for it!

If apple rejects again… Add an option to replace the default phone.app completely like bitesms/irealsms.

That would also bypass the need for push notifications since gv would always be running in the background. I wonder what the memory difference is between gv and phone app?

Regardless, thanks so much for all the work.

  51. @Dale Jacobs – not sure why you want GV Mobile to replace phone.app. If you want to run GVM+ in the background – just do it with Backgrounder. Although there is no reason to do that – just use Prowl for SMS/voicemail notifications as number of us already doing.

  52. Sean, just wondering.. any chance of fixing the square icon?? It completely ruins the look of my home screen for what otherwise is a wonderful app :-)

  53. Updating by intervals doesn’t work for me. It either doesn’t update or gives Connection Errors (but works fine on all other options?)

  54. I gladly spent my $2 on this – thank you!

One issue with the Offline dialing: In my iPhone Contacts (which sync to my Google Contacts), all my numbers have a ‘+’ sign and the country code. For example, any U.S. number I have is listed in this format: +12035551212 and it seems that offline dialing can’t accept it.

Is there anyway to change that, or do I have to go through my address book and delete all the “+1″ ?

  55. @Michael Michael, seems like you’re in a world of trouble. The speaker off/on doesn’t seem to be working as it should – and you’re the first one to mention this since v1. This leads me to believe something with the phone. The icon I will fix – normal iphones round the icons, some jb ones don’t. As for the history, Google has many ways of representing data – the reason it’s crashing is because I haven’t come across the way Google is displaying some of your history items. Shoot me an email and we can work this out, pending you did actually buy it (I don’t offer support to pirates, arggg).

  56. Amazing app worth every penny but I can seem toget prowl to open up gv + even though I set it up exactly how ub3rkitten has it setup. Any ideas? Yes I have latest prowl

  57. I’m still using the old free version. I’d buy one if it could be integrated into the iPhone the way it is with the Nexus One. I’d like to be able to click on a link in Safari and have it dial out using GV Mobile (i.e. have GV Mobile be the default dialer). Is this what happens with GV Mobile 2.0? Sean, is there any chance of seeing this? I’d pay good money for the ability to do this. It’s the only thing really making me consider switching to an Android phone when my contract is up.

  58. Is there a way to get notified when the app is updated with a fixed icon? The app is great but the square icon is ruining my beautiful home screen ;)

  59. Hi there, nice app – Worth it just for landscape mode ;)
Would it be possible to update the History screen with incoming/outgoing call icons like on the non+ GV Mobile app?
Right now, incoming/outgoing calls are only differentiated using different colour fonts, and I won’t be able to remember what colour means what.
A comment/bug report: the offline dialing is hit and miss for me. Sometimes it says the phone number is invalid, but if I restart the call, it works.

  60. Is there a way to actually have contacts show up on your phone as it does on android. Right now it only shows my google voice number when somebody calls it.

  61. I just noticed something – if you use offline dialing, your Voicemail (VM) Pin shows up in your recent call history. This is somewhat of a security problem. If this problem is unfixable, or difficult to fix, you might consider just displaying the VM Pin in the settings screen in plain-text, instead as *****, just so people know how vulnerable their VM Pin is using GV Mobile.

  62. It crashes to the homes screen, when I click the Favorites tab for contacts every time. Could someone help me solve this problem? I hate searching the number through all the contacts, and really like the Favorites feature…

  63. @Juanelo

I’m having the same exact problem. I can’t get past the loading screen before the app crashes. I’ve removed the app and tried reinstalling, but it still crashes.

  64. Just bought the app, it’s awesome! Thanks! Question, is there a way to make it do offline dialing with other apps, such as skype? If I want to place a call through google voice & skype as it stands now, I get skype running, enable my gizmo sip phone to ring in gv mobile, place the call, quickly hop over to skype and answer. The call quality suffers because it is being forwarded through gizmo. But with offline + skype, that would really rock! Keep up the good work!

  65. Great update to this app! I really like the new features and nearly everything works fabulously. One little problem, though: in the SMS screen on portrait mode, I can’t see what is being suggested by autocorrect, and if what I’m typing scrolls past the second line, the text doesn’t scroll to see what I’m typing. Please don’t say “use landscape.” I’ve been using the iPhone since the beginning, so I have always used portrait, and can type much faster that way.

  66. Great great update. Its working great from me so far except one little issue.

When I try to update the “phone to dial” (it shows my GV number) then click save, the app closes and the number remains the GV number.

    I have tried the following:
1.) Removed this and the previous version of GV and reboot.
2.) Reinstall only the GV Mobile+ reboot
3.) Open app and all settings are correct except the number to dial.
    4.) Edit number to dial
    5.) Click save
    6.) App closes.
7.) Open app and number is still the same.

    Thanks Sean!

  67. @Rohit
You should be able to change that in your Google Voice Settings. There is an option to show their number or your google voice number. If you have teh google voice number show up you want to turn on call presentation and call screening. : )

  68. Scott :

Solved my own problem. Looks like it was just me. : )
Basically I was trying to edit the number listed and instead I just needed to hit the plus and add the correct none GV number.

It may still be worth looking at why it closes the app when you hit save but it is nothing that will prevent functionality. : )

In fact if you edit any number already listed and select save it will close the app not saving the update.

  69. Hey Sean,

I’m having the same problem as Erik and Anonymous – the app crashes at the splash screen. I sent you an email about this earlier today, but thought I’d leave comment here as well. Let me know if there’s anything I can try to do.

  70. I’m getting a 500 internal server error after purchasing..and after I restarted Cydia I got the option to purchase..again. Reinstalling modmyi’s repo didn’t help.

    What should I do?

  71. Never mind. I was able to purchase the app successfully.

One sentence: Mr. Kovacs, you are a god among men. If/when Push is implemented, this will be one of the greatest apps ever made.

  72. Hi Sean thnx for this update, GV Mobile+ is a great app. How can I configure it to make WIFI calls though? I am currently using this configuration, Iphone + GV Mobile + Sipgate + Fring. However, trying to use GV Mobile+, it keeps prompting for a 4 digit pin. What to do?

  73. when trying to use the offline calling with gv mobile +, I always get an error which says wrong number or invalid number, but if i use the normal service i get thru, could you tell me what is wrong

  74. All of a sudden gv mobile plus stopped working. I reinstalled and now I keep getting an error message saying it cannot find the magic key. Also my regular gv mobile (not plus) just crashes back to springboard.

I paid for this and I would like to be able to use it again. It is essential app for me. Please release and update to fix this or post a solution to the magic key error here. I did not use my real email on this post. Thanks very much.

  75. I am having a similar issue as erik and anonymous. right when i load the app it works but as soon as i select SMS or voicemail it crashes the app.

when i try to dial out i get an error: Google Voice refused to make the call. This may be due to an invalid phone to ring or you’re trying to call a incorrect number. Please Verify the number and try again”

  77. @Decent Rafi.

It happened to me to as of yesterday, nothing can make it work. I am using Voice Central’s instead, GV mobile sucks.

  78. Anyone have any idea how to stop the Magic Key Error? This is a major hassle since I use this app all day everyday for business.

  79. Hi Sean,

I am having the exact same problem. The app crashes whenever I click on a name in Contacts to add to favorites. Do you have a fix for this?

  80. Wow, this is frustrating. I’m trying to perform the seemingly simple task of handing over a couple bucks to see if GV Mobile+ actually works (since all GV Mobile ever did was blink and quit). 3GS, 4.0.1, otherwise functional jailbreak.

Trying to fork over the money via PayPal. “Purchase Package” takes me to the login page, but even with the magnifying glass to see the inexplicably squeezed login page, and trying a dozen times, making absolutely sure to get each keystroke correct, the login is repeatedly rejected. Logging in to PayPal separately (via laptop) with the same credentials works fine (repeatedly).

I’ll keep plugging away, but I’m way down Rapidlydiminishingreturn Street on this one already.

    Sigh.

I’m wlling to pay for the full version, but since the free version quits for me every time I try to access the voicemail or history I’m not going to spend money to find that happens on the full version as well. This was the one app I jailbroke to use.

Thanks for the mention of Voice Central. It’s a pretty slick option and far far faster than Google’s own offering. I’m using the free option but about ready to pay for it and remove the ads now that I know it works.

(my guess is that there’s a reason this app isn’t getting any attention or response, considering the number of people who’d like to use it)

  82. I have it installed on iPods and iPhone to text my kids. It works but you need to close and reopen the SMS tab to see new messages. Not very convenient. Am I doing something wrong?

  83. How come there is a “$0.10″ sing on the top left corner of the Dialing screen? Have I putting in the wrong setting? Seems like no one have the same issue.
