GV Mobile + on Cydia

January 16th, 2010

It’s out folks. Go consume it and enjoy. It’s on the ModMyI repo.
Thanks to Kyle and Jay for getting this all set up.

What are the changes you ask:

Well, first, it cost money. Yeah, I know, I hear ya – but everything in life isn’t free.

Changes/Updates:
+Favorites
+New tab system for Contacts, Favorites, Keypad
+Landscape SMS
+Call & Add Contact from SMS main view
+International support for SMS (until Google blocks it)
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from History
+Voicemail transcriptions, new voicemail screen layout
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from Voicemail
+Local archiving of voicemail (doesn’t download every time)
+Offline dialing (via dialing GV #)
+Default Area code (for those that don’t need to dial the area code in you area)
+More data sync options (Interval, Startup, Startup on demand, manual)
+Multiple Accounts
+User selectable tab to open to
+More Google Settings : Do Not Disturb, Call Screening, Call Presentation
+The core of the updates reside in the back end programming of the app – completely rebuilt from ground up.

Update:

Two quick things:

1) The icon is squared, but OS does round it. I can assure you something 3rd party is turning this off. However, I will update it.
2)The icon shifted up, down, left, right. See 1. I can’t fix this because if I manually shift the graphic up in the PNG, it will be shifted up for all those that don’t have this issue. I’ve had beta testers install via a legal ways (Adhoc) and I’ve installed it via Cydia and another method and the icon is simply fine.

If someone can educate me on #2, that would be great.

HIP HIP HOOORAY!. Love the new contacts system, the VM Transcriptions and new url scheme (now if Prowl would just add it to their list). Being able to finally move my cursor to edit typos I made in the middle of a sms is very nice also ;)

Thanks again Sean! Now… when are we getting 3.0? (j/k)

So what’s the word on if we pay for this one and later an app store version is released? I’m guessing the app store version would be the one receiving updates if that happened, so would you do something for us like give everyone who bought on Cydia a code for a free download?

I just purchased and downloaded this new app. It worked for a minute, but now it just crashes every time I try to open it.

Congrats on the getting this out successfully! I honestly hope that Apple approves it for you too! There are tons of peeps that don’t know or won’t jailbreak and it would be good to let them take part in this fun too!

Looks good. I’ve been looking forward to this. However, the icon is very square and doesn’t really look like an iPhone app icon. It also continues to be a pixel or two lower than other app icons. Other than that it seems to be working well!

Is it just me or when trying to pay for this app through amazon payments on Cydia is giving me a 500 error? What gives?

  11. 500 error
    January 16th, 2010 at 16:00

    @Seth
    Same error message here

  12. January 16th, 2010 at 16:11

I guess I lucked out. It’s performing like a champ for me. Thank you, Sean…

Feature request: I can has ‘Remaining Balance: $XX.XX’ over the dialer? When I’m making international calls? That would be SO NICE.

  13. January 16th, 2010 at 16:20

@Erik Shoot me an email, no? What if I don’t read these comments? Give me some more details in an email – what did you do before you closed it, what does it show when you open.

  14. January 16th, 2010 at 16:20

@Leo Marihart Yeah I can add that – just where though. :)

  15. January 16th, 2010 at 16:31

So WHAT HAPPENED TO GV Mobile Lite?!

  16. January 16th, 2010 at 16:32

Picked this up just now, like the improvements. Thanks for keeping this both alive and in Cydia. =)

I would LOVE to buy the new GV Mobile + from Cydia, but there’s one problem. Google Checkout won’t let me allow Cydia. There seems to be a problem with either the HTML/CSS on the verification page, or it’s the way Cydia renders it. The bottom line is I can’t touch the “Allow” button. See the pic below. Anyone else have this problem?

This is awesome. Seems faster. The ability to edit SMS and having voicemail transcripts took care of the only two (small) issues I had with it before. Thank you!! Hope Apple wises up and allows this for you.

Did anyone try offline mode yet? How does it work?

  22. Marty
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:15

Yeah, already paid $3 for it in the app store, don’t really wanna pay for it again on cydia and then again on the app store if it ever makes it back in. I think I’ll wait.

  23. JMR
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:16

For some reason it keeps thinking that I have unread SMSes when I launch it, so it vibrates. Then it auto-updates and the “new messages” go away. When I quit and relaunch, same thing happens.

  24. somenam123
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:20

what is Offline dialing (via dialing GV #)?
Does that mean AT&T minutes wont be used?

  25. Ole
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:25

offline = no use of wifi or 3G to place calls.

With the original app you need to be online in order to use the app to place a call.
If you don’t have a data plan/3G (iphone on T-Mobile) and you are in a place where there is no access to wifi, offline mode comes in handy, instead of manually dialing you google voice number and then the phone number you wish to call.

  26. JMR
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:26

    @Ole
Offline dialing requires… patience… to say the least. It’s not really the app’s fault, since apple doesn’t let developers dial the # key, so the app is forced to wait until Google decides to automatically connect the call ~10sec.

I assume, however, that if the app is rejected from the app store (not that anyone is wishing for that) Sean would get rid of this limitation, since he would no longer have to kowtow to Apple’s (idiotic) rules.

  27. Ole
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:29

if it is a matter of patience I can live with it, no problem there.
I just don’t to write down a phone number I need to call from my contacts, dial GV first, input my password, press 2 and then dial the phone number I just wrote down on a piece of paper.

  28. JMR
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:36

I wonder whether someone could write a tiny extension that just dials the # key after GV+ dials the number. That way GV+ would still playing by the rules, and only us naughty jailbroken folks would have the ability to dial offline quickly.

  29. Ole
    January 16th, 2010 at 17:39

would it work if the phone number is saved in the contacts folder with the # extension at the end, right after the last digit of the phone number?

  30. January 16th, 2010 at 18:02

@JMR Maybe you have some old old unread sms or vm’s? The initial load pulls all/any unread…while the stuff that displays only grabs the first 15 or so sms or vm’s.

  31. January 16th, 2010 at 18:04

@Ole Let me see what I can do about adding that # back in for the Cydia version. Shaves off 10 secs or so. :)

  32. January 16th, 2010 at 18:08

@Marty I don’t blame ya…but I guess if you think about it, you probably spend more on a coffee or fast food. Err, well at least I do. :) We’ll see what next week brings us…

  33. January 16th, 2010 at 18:09

    @joe4444 Hmmmmm….can you zoom in/out so it re-adjusts?

  34. Ole
    January 16th, 2010 at 18:11

    @sean
Having to wait 10 seconds means nothing to me. I use an old Motorola phone so I am used to a long process of dialing 2 phone numbers to place a phone call.
My wife has an iphone which has the first version of GV mobile.

If it all comes down to 10 seconds in order to be able to use the app offline, I’ll (she’ll) deal with it.

  35. JMR
    January 16th, 2010 at 18:15

    @sean
Yep, that was the problem! I hadn’t noticed before since they didn’t make a fuss in GV Mobile 1.

    January 16th, 2010 at 18:26

I LOVE it. Seriously smitten again. Makes life so much easier. BUt what is with the icon? It was too small before; now it’s all square. It makes everything else look wonky. Still; it flies.

Sean, is there a way to split it up so I have SMS and Phone in two separate apps? Or what appear to be separate icons?

  37. Bryan
    January 16th, 2010 at 18:26

Have you addressed the SMS sorting/order? Google Voice has a really terrible way of grouping messages together (not sorted by contact then time received like everywhere else).

    January 16th, 2010 at 18:45

Congratulations! I was a user of the original app store version, and I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time! That said — I’m a little nervous about buying the new version, because of a problem I had before. I’m still using my original 2G iPhone. In the past, when I tried to initiate a call over EDGE using GVM, I wouldn’t get a ring. GV *was* calling, but it was going straight to my regular voicemail. Unfortunately, GV couldn’t tell that I hadn’t actually picked up, so the poor call recipient would hear their phone ring, pick up, and be greeted with silence. Later, I’d get the voicemail of the whole thing — the phone ringing, the person picking up, the “hello? hello?” and finally the click. My theory was that this was because the 2G iPhone can’t do voice and cellular data at the same time, and GV Mobile was still occupying that data connection when the GV call came in. I noticed the disclaimer in your Cydia description about weak connections, so I wonder if this is what you were referring to? Thanks, and again congrats. :)

  40. January 16th, 2010 at 18:48

@Bryan Yeah, I cant do tooo much without an api that gives me the right data. I hate the way they do it…I can see why they do it…but oh well

  41. January 16th, 2010 at 18:51

@Jesse Yeah…that kinda is it. I see this problem as well..so it’s not just you. I just cant do too much about it as its like something with the Edge. By the time you answer your incoming GV #, the app is closed. So I’m just not sure.. :(

Hi Sean, any chance for threaded texts?

  44. Reza
    January 16th, 2010 at 19:22

@Reza to clarify: it shows only the most recent, not all of them. Is there a way to bunch all texts from one contact under one thread?

I am using the iphone 2G but without a data plan (EDGE). It works perfectly fine on wifi.

    Hello,

When I use the app, it doesn’t seem to work correctly.

For example, when I dial, it just says ‘Dialing…”, then it goes back. I am connected to wifi, and I tried it over 3G as well.

Also, when I send an SMS, nothing ever is received on the other phone.

    I am on a jailbroken 3GS, running 3.1.2.

    Thx!

Disregard above comment regarding SMS. However, it seems like I have to try 10+ times to make a call. Anything I can tweak on my end?

So got it, thanks, big improvements. Quick question, been using prowl to open gv mobile, had to edit the plists for prowl to allow this. Is there a way to open SMS or Voicemail tabs from the prowl command line? Thanks!

Add, anyone know the wht edits I need to make so it loads the new gv mobile instead of trying to load the old one? ;)
