GV Mobile + on Cydia

January 16th, 2010

It’s out folks. Go consume it and enjoy. It’s on the ModMyI repo.
Thanks to Kyle and Jay for getting this all set up.

What are the changes you ask:

Well, first, it cost money. Yeah, I know, I hear ya – but everything in life isn’t free.

Changes/Updates:
+Favorites
+New tab system for Contacts, Favorites, Keypad
+Landscape SMS
+Call & Add Contact from SMS main view
+International support for SMS (until Google blocks it)
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from History
+Voicemail transcriptions, new voicemail screen layout
+Call, Text, & Add Contact from Voicemail
+Local archiving of voicemail (doesn’t download every time)
+Offline dialing (via dialing GV #)
+Default Area code (for those that don’t need to dial the area code in you area)
+More data sync options (Interval, Startup, Startup on demand, manual)
+Multiple Accounts
+User selectable tab to open to
+More Google Settings : Do Not Disturb, Call Screening, Call Presentation
+The core of the updates reside in the back end programming of the app – completely rebuilt from ground up.

Update:

Two quick things:

1) The icon is squared, but OS does round it. I can assure you something 3rd party is turning this off. However, I will update it.
2)The icon shifted up, down, left, right. See 1. I can’t fix this because if I manually shift the graphic up in the PNG, it will be shifted up for all those that don’t have this issue. I’ve had beta testers install via a legal ways (Adhoc) and I’ve installed it via Cydia and another method and the icon is simply fine.

If someone can educate me on #2, that would be great.

@sean, I zoomed in to hide my e-mail address :) but I have GV Mobile + now and am really loving the landscape SMS. Great update!
@Anonymous, thanks, I didn’t even see the Reload button.

@sean, I noticed a few things so far. When I try to set a ringtone for a contact I’m stuck on that page because there is no Save or Back button so I have to quit the app. Next, I prefer the old behavior of immediately displaying the contact’s phone number in the dialer (if he has only one number) instead of making me click his only number after I already clicked his name. Finally, I miss the Dial On Click option in settings from the old version (or I just can’t find it?) because I don’t like it when GV Mobile starts dialing automatically if I accidentally clicked the wrong contact. None of these issues really bother me. I don’t even set individual ringtones, but I’m sure other people do and they might not like getting stuck on that screen. Everything else is wonderful :) Excellent work!

Sean, I mean you got my 2$ but I love that your app was free before. I am going to have to say I wish you went with a rounded Icon for the App Icon. No bugs so far with my install on a 3GS.

Sean can you please add a extra contact tab with the actual gv contacts instead of the contacts on the actual ipod/iphone.

Hey Sean. The new version looks great. Thank You for it. However I have a question about a feature you removed which is a bit disappointing and forcing me to continue to use the old version. In the original version, the user could choose which phone number to ring in addition to which number to forward to. New version only offers a setting for which number to forward to. I had a very specific use for this and now with only having the number to forward to feature, I have to either 1) change my inbound routing frequently or 2) change which phone number to ring from GV via web. I can explain my detailed the usage of GV with multiple IAX and SIP trunks but do not want to write a book here.

Is there a reason why you did not leave this in?

Just so I’m not missing something, is the multiple account support so that you can use other GV accounts for the SMS/History/Voicemail functions in the app only? You can’t send/receive calls from multiple GV accounts with the same forwarding phone…

Setting a phone-to-ring as ‘Gizmo phone’ consistently crashes the app..

Bummer, as I wanted to use the app to dial out via my Gizmo ATA to avoid GV 3-minute limit.. Hope this is fixed soon.

@sean Maybe you could implement some kind of relay/delay for sending the message to the GV servers? If the app made the request to GV through an intermediary maybe that would give it enough time to disengage with the EDGE data connection?

    Hey Sean,

Great work on the app and thanks for your hard work. However, I must ask what made you decide to NOT include push notification in this update? …or I missing something and it is?

    Thanks!

    @Jeremy
You need to be an official App Store app to use Apple’s push servers from what I understand.

  17. January 17th, 2010 at 04:51

    @Jeremy
I don’t really like self-promoting, but I made a site called VoiceGrowl that might help you:
    http://googlevoice.ub3rk1tten.com/voicegrowl/
    http://voicegrowl.posterous.com/voicegrowl-and-gv-mobile

You could also do something similar with http://gvmax.com , but they require you to give up your Google username and password, only do SMS, and poll for messages rather than instantly pushing them.

  18. Illixer
    January 17th, 2010 at 04:59

    @Jeremy
indeed, gv mobile + would first have to be approved by Apple’s App Store first before official push notification service would be allowed. However, there are alternative push service ways. Personally I have gmail forward my sms’s to my Textfree account, then turn on push for Textfree. it won’t load the proper app when opening to reply, but it does show the sender info and a preview of the message. :)

A quick couple of questions about the new version before I replace the old…

#1 – Can the previous version remain installed when installing the new GV Mobile+?

#2 – In the SMS screen, is there still a limit to the amount of SMS conversations it will load? The previous (free) version limited it to 15 conversations (I believe.)

Also, I believe it was mentioned in the past but is there any way that GV Mobile could access the Google Voice contacts (saved in the Google Voice account)? It be super useful…

Thanks for the update & for all your hard work!

I was quite happy with GV Mobile 1 and didn’t see any real reason to upgrade. 1 did everything I needed and it did it well. However, i figured that since I would be willing to pay for that I might as well buy the new version, if for no other reason than to support the developer.
Sean, I hope you are able to continue improving this great product. Thanks!

Why don’t you just sync all your iphone contacts with Google Contacts? Thats what most people do, I think…

The best push notification system I’ve seen yet is to use Prowl. Prowl will push growl notifications to your iPhone, but it also has support for third party services. I currently have a Python script running on my computer that pushes SMS and Vociemail notifications to Prowl. There are also free 3rd party services that will do this for you as well. Prowl then has the ability to forward you to GV Mobile+ automatically.

So on my phone when I get an SMS I get a notification just like a native SMS. Prowl then opens up but immediately quits and opens GV Mobile+ directly to the SMS page.

With GV Mobile + and Prowl it’s pretty close to having native support for Google Voice :)

Is no one else using the app called Notifications made by Conovae http://www.appnotifications.com ? It’s only $2.99 but gives you an e-mail address and 20,000 free notifications ($0.99 per 10,000 after that). There is no hassle with running Growl on your personal computer 24/7. It’s always on and very quick to forward notifications. You just set Google Voice to forward SMS to the e-mail it provides. I e-mailed the developer yesterday, and he’s already submitted an update to his app that integrates with the new GV Mobile + URL schemes to launch directly to the SMS tab (or voicemail tab) when you receive a text notification. There is also a nice API interface that allows you to send customized notifications via curl, which is pretty cool.

I switched to VoiceGrowl instead of Textfree push, and I must say it’s better seeing as it will redirect.

    @Dan

Dan, in the Prowl settings there is a button to update the list of redirection apps. It will pull down a list from the developer. If there is something that you want that isn’t on the list you can probably request it on their forum. The developer is pretty open to suggestions. GV Mobile+ is already in the list :)

    Hi Sean..

I just bought the latest version of your app via Cydia and every time I click on the history tab it crashes. No idea what the problem may be. When I click the history tab in the old version of your app (still loaded) it loads just fine and doesn’t crash. Any ideas? I’ve rebooted my phone. Also, would love to figure out the icon problem many are describing. I can tell you my particular phone may be jailbroken, but I have no themeing installed (no mobilesubstrate or anything of the sort).

    Thank you.

Just noticed.. not only does it crash when I goto the History tab.. the “Speaker Off/On” button in the Voicemail tab also doesn’t work as its suppose to be default. It defaults to “Speaker Off” .. which I would assume means that my Voicemail should be blaring out of the Speakerphone (which only makes sense), but in fact the audio is coming out of the ear speaker (unacceptable). When I hit the “Speaker Off” button (so that it says Speaker On) the audio is still coming out of the ear speaker … it’s not until I hit the button again (so that it once again says Speaker Off) that audio comes out of the Speakerphone. For a very short voicemail, this process results in me NOT EVEN HEARING the voicemail. :(

    So three issues going forward…….
#1: Tapping the History tab crashes the program. When you relaunch you had better hit another tab before the app crashes, otherwise the next time you launch it will just crash again (unless you see default tab to something other than “Last”)
#2: Voicemail speaker on/off button doesn’t act as it should
#3: Square icon that is misaligned (despite not having any third party theming packages like mobilesubstrate/etc loaded.

    Any ideas Sean?

    Sean,

    LOVE THE APP! ALWAYS HAVE!

I bought it from the App Store, followed it over to the Jailbroken community, and I’m proud to let my money invest into a worthwhile app once again.

Here’s the thing. I’m a iPod Touch user. I wish I was on an iPhone, but right now it’s not within the realm of my budget. Listening to voicemails on my 1G iPod Touch NEVER works on GV Mobile+.

    Any tips?

    THANKS A BAZILLION TIMES!

Love the update and was happy to pay for it!

If apple rejects again… Add an option to replace the default phone.app completely like bitesms/irealsms.

That would also bypass the need for push notifications since gv would always be running in the background. I wonder what the memory difference is between gv and phone app?

Regardless, thanks so much for all the work.

  40. ctyrider
    January 18th, 2010 at 01:04

@Dale Jacobs – not sure why you want GV Mobile to replace phone.app. If you want to run GVM+ in the background – just do it with Backgrounder. Although there is no reason to do that – just use Prowl for SMS/voicemail notifications as number of us already doing.

I gladly spent my $2 on this – thank you!

One issue with the Offline dialing: In my iPhone Contacts (which sync to my Google Contacts), all my numbers have a ‘+’ sign and the country code. For example, any U.S. number I have is listed in this format: +12035551212 and it seems that offline dialing can’t accept it.

Is there anyway to change that, or do I have to go through my address book and delete all the “+1″ ?

  44. January 18th, 2010 at 10:11

@Michael Michael, seems like you’re in a world of trouble. The speaker off/on doesn’t seem to be working as it should – and you’re the first one to mention this since v1. This leads me to believe something with the phone. The icon I will fix – normal iphones round the icons, some jb ones don’t. As for the history, Google has many ways of representing data – the reason it’s crashing is because I haven’t come across the way Google is displaying some of your history items. Shoot me an email and we can work this out, pending you did actually buy it (I don’t offer support to pirates, arggg).

  45. January 18th, 2010 at 10:12

Yes, the icon will be fixed.

  46. January 18th, 2010 at 13:21

Is there a way to have GV be used to dial when I click on a phone number from Safari or my native Mail applications?

Amazing app worth every penny but I can seem toget prowl to open up gv + even though I set it up exactly how ub3rkitten has it setup. Any ideas? Yes I have latest prowl

  48. smallfrys
    January 18th, 2010 at 15:29

I’m still using the old free version. I’d buy one if it could be integrated into the iPhone the way it is with the Nexus One. I’d like to be able to click on a link in Safari and have it dial out using GV Mobile (i.e. have GV Mobile be the default dialer). Is this what happens with GV Mobile 2.0? Sean, is there any chance of seeing this? I’d pay good money for the ability to do this. It’s the only thing really making me consider switching to an Android phone when my contract is up.
