All you OS4 Jail-breakers

August 2nd, 2010

With the recent jail-break for OS4, you could imagine the millions of people jail-breaking their phone. I know Kyle at ModMyi is seeing it, as well as many others. Anyway, here is some tips to commonly asked questions:

  • If I bought GV Mobile + on OS3.x, will it transfer? Yes! Just use the same Cydia login you used to purchase GV Mobile + before and it will recognize the old purchase and allow you to re-download for free.
  • Why am I having problems download GV Mobile + (Host Unreachable, Error 500, etc)? See above. The repo GV Mobile + is housed on is ModMyI and it’s getting slammed pretty hard. And no, that repo isn’t running on some shitbox…Kyle has some pretty bad ass hardware behind it. Just please be patient…please. I cannot do anything for you.
  • Why is GV Mobile (not +) crashing on X, Y, Z screen? The parser that pulls the information in for voicemails, history, and SMS is older than the one in GV Mobile +, so it’s not up-to-date with the new stuff Google threw in. Will I update it? Yes, when I get to it. It’s free after all…and I do have a life and job. Just sayin’…
  • I bought GV Mobile when it was on the App Store, do I have to pay for GV Mobile +? While I want to say no, I can’t. Apple doesn’t tell me who bought it, so there is not AUTOMATED way for me to verify your past purchase. I reduced the price on Cydia ($1.99) so you didn’t have to break open the piggy bank. Pfft
  • Sean, I’m getting a lot of SMS spam on my iPhone number, WTF man? Yea, me too. What’s the dealio? Spam filtering at the head-end…hmm. Anyone want to partner up and make this happen. Let me know.
  • Are you going to update GV Mobile + to take advantage of eye-ball display, multitasking, etc…? Currently, no. I don’t own a new iPhone, nor will I ever, so there is no advantage for me doing so. UPDATE: <zombie-voice>Yes, yes I will.</zombie-voice>  <—that should be an HTML5 feature.

SMS spam for the iPhone or GV number? SMS spam with AT&T is relatively easy to dispatch. Just go to http://mymessages.wireless.att.com/, register for an account using your number, and enter in the domain names of the SMS spammers (it’s how I got rid of the SMS from Apple).

why no new iphone? a protest? not sure they would care but if you use your skills to develop jailbroken apps and build that side then it’ll hurt them as they are not getting all that cash ;)

@Dade Yeah, a protest. If I don’t like a company, I won’t buy from them. Never liked Apple really…just their phone. Now that everyone else makes the same phone but better, what’s the point. I’m sure you’ll find a lot of people that won’t shop somewhere, or buy something in protest.
As far as Cydia…it will _NEVER_ hurt them. Google and MS will hurt them…

I totally understand where you’re coming from with the whole being sick of dealing with development for the iPhone (I’m almost at that point myself). Have you considered putting up this project for sale so that someone can scoop it up and continue development on it? Because I’m not quite ready to give up on the iPhone platform yet, and I know I’m not alone. I still rely on your application countless times a day, and it is a real life saver for me. I know I’m not exactly alone in this situation. It would be really nice to see this get developed further by SOMEONE, even if you’re fed up with Apple. ;)

Thanks for your consideration and everything that you’ve done. Oh and thanks for putting up with self-entitled people like me that think we deserve an instantly-updated GV Mobile. :P

I just want to echo others here: 1) I REALLY appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into this project! 2) I hope you consider continuing the project in earnest!

    Thanks again man!

    1. Thanks Sean for everything you did and continue to do for the GC/GV community

    2. Too bad android is all fractured, I’d switch in an instant

    3. Kind of scary to see articles and people talk about the future of “computing” with “apps” Damn you Apple for dumbing down the user

Its probably a dumb question, but have you tried resubmitting GV Mobile+ to the app store since iOS 4? There have been so many SDK changes since this time last year that perhaps it will be accepted this time?

Or should I say, has it *ever* been rejected? Or does it continue to remain in limbo to this day?

  10. August 3rd, 2010 at 13:08

@Yuusharo It’s been in approval review since…July 09…the app is so complex, it takes a lot of time apparently.

Sean, still not decided yet on a new phone?

  12. August 4th, 2010 at 08:44

@Ole Neg. I’m split between Android and WP7. I’m waiting on the launch of WP7, and then I’ll decide.

About the SMS tab, can you make it function like the SMS app with autofill from address book in the “to” field with names? Thanks again. Another reason to JB :D

    August 5th, 2010 at 08:52

Hey Sean. Thanks for this app. I love it. I’m trying to download it on my JB iP4 and it’s saying I need to purchase it. I went through all the steps except for the last step in the hope that Cydia/PayPal would recognize my purchase ($1.99 paid on Jan 17, 2010) and nothing. $1.99 isn’t a big deal, but I was wondering if there is something that I’m missing. I’ve been a loyal supporter of GV Mobile and GV Mobile +.

    Thanks again!

Hey Sean, I was one of the ones slamming the server the night jailbreakme.com came up…sorry ’bout that :P

Anyway, it is very sad to hear that you are leaving the iPhone dev community. Sad, but totally understandable. I am definitely looking over the shoulder of the Android users in the office thinking about my upgrade option coming up next year. The one thing that would definitely do it for me is if the GV Mobile + app dies.

Any way that you could pass the app off to someone else to continue your excellent work?

  17. August 5th, 2010 at 17:26

    @sean

Didn’t Steve Jobs say that the turn around time for apps to be approved takes less than a week or something? Maybe it fell off their queue. Wouldn’t hurt to resubmit it again. Your app is the only reason I’ve jailbroken the iPhone 4

    August 6th, 2010 at 08:49

    @Louie
That won’t help, Apple is doing it intentionally:

I purchased gv mobile + today , however i cannot get it working in India as thats where I am. I donot have google voice. How can I get this app working.

  21. JS
    August 9th, 2010 at 07:42

@aniel You can’t get this to work without a Google voice account. And GV services works at the US only.

@aniel Sorry. I meant GV services only works FOR the US only. You can be out of the US and it still works.

Finally decided to go for it and pay the 2 dollars. AMAZING, really, i dont go a day without using it. Thanks sean for all your hard work, it is much appreciated. I do hope you continue development on the app.

Dont mean to nag, but multitasking and the ability to type in a contact’s name in the sms to field would really be awesome.

Thanks again for your dedication to the project!

GV Mobile + is not loading my SMS messages – it hangs up on refreshing SMS but it works perfectly on the regular version of GV Mobile

  26. km
    August 15th, 2010 at 17:42

    @k3

One more request: If the task completion API could be implemented into multitasking it would be great. Too often I type an SMS, hit send and close the app, only to realize much later that I closed the app too quickly to allow it to send. Would be great if it continued to send even when closed, like the default Messages.app.

    Thanks Sean!

GV Mobile + does not seem to be loading my SMS’s, Voicemails, or Call History. I have iPhone 4 with ios 4.01. I just get blank screens for all of those

  29. August 19th, 2010 at 09:59

@ab03 Turn off multiple account sign in.

  30. Jeff
    August 21st, 2010 at 08:26

@sean You don’t have to turn off multiple account sign in. If you log onto Google Voice in Safari and send a text message, GV Mobile+ will start working again

  31. August 23rd, 2010 at 09:36

@Jeff That’s too much magic for me to handle. The reason GV Mobile doesn’t work when Multiple account sign is turn on is because when it’s off, the URL is as such: google.com/voice/, but when it’s turned on, calls have to be made to: google.com/voice/b/0 or something like that. GV Mobile is just not setup for that currently.

So you can probably do some wizardry and get it work, but it’s not recommended.

I used gv mobile in the past and just went to download it tonight after a long time of being google-voiceless.
I was ready to buy it but from your post I am realizing it isn’t currently setup for the retina display.
I have an iphone 4 shipping soon and was hoping to migrate my business line to a new gv line to use with your app. Hoping you implement this soon!
You will definetly have my purchase if you do!
Hell, if you setup a donation button after you add this, I would go ahead and add what I think your program is worth rather than what you ask for it!

Any word on an update to GV Mobile to allow calling and straight-up making phone calls? I only ask because, as of today, Google allows you to make regular phone calls from GMail.

    P.S. GREAT APP SEAN…

Get a similar app somewhere else. Lots of them all over the place, and they are all free for all operating systems available. If you’re lucky maybe they will even pay you to use their app.

  38. I want GV Mobile
    August 31st, 2010 at 01:14

This is far from a great app. It is mediocre at best, verging on near useless with the google voice web app. There are a couple of things about it that make it useful in certain situations.. Mr. Kovacs needs to take more pride in his work before this becomes a great app. Part of being proud of what you do is constantly working to improve upon what you create. The sluggish and lack luster work of this developer needs to be turned over to someone else who can take pride in it, and not have it feel like a chore every single time he has to update it. Mr. Kovacs, please let someone else work on this for you. Obviously you cannot let go of your issues with Apple, giving you no motivation to keep this thing alive.

  39. Ole

It works absolutely fine for me. I don’t understand the frustration you guys have with it. It’s greatest strength in my opinions is the ability to work offline.

  40. August 31st, 2010 at 13:28

@I want GV Mobile I liked to be called Sean. This app is simple enough that if someone wanted something better, they can create it. Graphic updates are coming, as stated…constantly improving upon? This is not an operating system…Google Voice has a defined set of features, most of which are implemented in GV Mobile +. While there is always a feature someone wants, I go with what the vast majority of people want. I will not cater to everyone’s needs, nor will any other software shop.

Look at the native GV app that Google builds…does it everything everyone wants? No, it’s actually pretty basic in a good way. Is it being constantly improved? For having no affiliation with Google nor access to their APIs (which would increase my productivity towards this app, mind you), I think I’m holding my own.
Also check my About section again…that will show you where my priorities lie (which ties back to my 2nd sentence).

    @aniel

if the Whistle Phone app is available in your area, use that to get the GV verify handled. Whistle gives you a US number and it’s free. Someone with an iPod Touch could use Whistle for a free wifi phone if they wanted to.

iCall is another one to try if Whistle isn’t available.

  42. September 6th, 2010 at 12:50
