Sean, will GVM+ be iOS5 compatible from the get go? Thanks!

  2. October 6th, 2011 at 20:51

Yes. No reason not to be.

Great! I thought I had seen you post something a couple of months or so ago about testing GVM+ for iOS5, so I wasn’t sure if you were adding new tweaks or if that had to do with making sure everything worked as intended under the OS upgrade. Thanks!

I am using this app on iOS 5 and it’s working fine, but one annoying glitch I’ve noticed is that the app is constantly displaying text messages twice. Please fix this. (1st gen iPad wifi+3G 16GB)

quick question: will there be any ability to export a conversation to email? also, what does the “sms grouping” mean?

    • October 11th, 2011 at 14:34

      Perhaps in time…
Google Voice naturally splits conversations between you and someone else out based on timing. SMS Grouping will combine all conversations between you and person A into one (think iPhone).

Perfect. I hate that separate conversation issue, just didn’t realize that was the option… thanks.

I just bought this so I can block calls. This app that downloaded looks nothing like what I paid for ! very strange . How do I get the app that I paid for ? I wanted block calls.

  8. October 17th, 2011 at 07:50

How can that be? There are screen shots in the store.
Regarding blocking calls…are your intentions to block people from calling your GV #? If so, it can be done. Google Voice, the service, nor this app can block calls coming into your cell phone…if it says that anywhere in my description, let me know.

I suspect there’s a fix for this but unsure what it is. I will get notification pop up of the SMS message, but once I open it up, the message doesn’t show up. I have to manually refresh for it to show up. Is there a way for it to automatically refresh the messages without the manual step?

    • October 18th, 2011 at 07:47

Reboot your phone. The app will refresh every time it’s launched. You may just need to wait until it does its thing depending on your connection.

i just downloaded the new gv mobile, and turned on the push notification in both the app and my settings but it still won’t pop up. what should i do?

Open GV Mobile + and click on “settings.” Scroll down to the bottom where it says “Push notifications” and press the right pointing arrow. You’ll see several options, including one that says “Setup Instructions.” Press on that arrow and you’ll find the directions. It works great for me!

thanks, but I actually have tried that and followed the instructions for it, the push notification still don’t pop up though And isn’t that only setup for email notification??

No, it should result in your getting push notifications anytime you receive a text or voicemail or missed call. It works for me. Maybe you should go back and see if you there is any step that you may have missed. Or maybe Sean can offer some help.

    Hey Sean,

Although I use GV Mobile+ constantly and prefer it, I’ve been poking around with GV Connect lately out of curiosity. I still prefer your app, but it had a few features that I thought I’d suggest for GV Mobile+ to make it a little more useful.

The first is the option to set when DND expires. For example, usually when I’m in class I’ll set DND to expire at the end of class. But sometimes for various reasons I won’t be on my computer, and I’ll set it on my iPod. But if I forget to turn it back off when I leave class then I can’t be reached until I get back to wifi to turn it off, since I don’t have a smartphone. Having the option to set when it expires through the app would be really useful.

The other idea is just a visual touch. I noticed that in the inbox, GV Connect shows contact pictures. This is by no means necessary, but I do like it, and I imagine others would too.

Anyway, just thought I’d throw those out there! Thanks!

There is a reason why some of the options available on the Google website are not available in GVM+…the API used. GVM+ uses a low key data limited API to provide a fast user experience while on the cellular network. The drawback to this is the lack of having everything at your disposal. Setting the expire time for DND is just one of these things that can’t be done with this low key API. So if you reset your Data Traffic counters in iOS, and load up GVM, you’ll notice it will draw 10kB or so per request…compared to over 100kB for the same data request in other applications.

And really – you have to explicitly turn on DND, is it that much harder to turn it off?

Sorry, but no pictures. With the limited real-estate, it’s much better used for displaying the information people use the app for. I’m sure Apple has done a lot of UI research into reasons to include/not include pictures in their contacts/call history – I’ll follow in their steps. Also, Apple has a picture app that can be used for looking at pictures of people. :)

Is there a way that I can change the text tone of your app? Thanks,

    • October 21st, 2011 at 11:49

No. Apple doesn’t provide developers an easy way to allow users to change notification tones.

I just bought the app while the Google one was MIA.

Am I understanding this correctly? The push notification listed in the app store actually refers to a forwarded email and not actually receiving push notifications from the app?

Any chance this will be built into the app and use actual notifications from the app instead of this weird workaround? I get way too many emails to try to monitor them for when I get a notification from the app. It absolutely needs to be separated in the notification center (providing I’m correct in understanding how the push works…). If this can’t be done then this app was a waste of $3 as it’s useless without notifications.

Cancel that. I just finished the setup process and it appears that it is coming from the app. Super awesome! I didn’t see that spelled out in the directions so you may want to add it, as it *appears* from a quick look over the directions that it’s just forwarding a notification email. Glad to see that’s not the case.

      Thanks Sean!

I am getting Auth err (Level 1). Double checked credentials and still getting same error. Please help.

    • October 28th, 2011 at 21:34

Turn off 2 factor authentication or generate an app specific password for GVM+. Or reset your password.

me too! Started acting up yesterday I think… Any ideas? I think might be a Google thing because my GV SMS Extension and GV Phone Extensions get a similar error on my phone, but on my wife’s phone everything works like a charm, so I have no idea where the problem is…

    Hi Sean,

Thanks for an awesome app and all the hard work you continue to put into it!

Since I’ve updated to iOS 5, the “Default” push notification sound no longer works. All the other ones do. Even when I tap it in the list of sounds to play a preview, nothing but silence. Any ideas?
