GV Mobile + v2.5.1 available

May 12th, 2012

The long awaited update should be hitting the stores shortly. Remember to go and grab your updated email addresses.

Update: It appears it’s taking longer than expected for all the servers to sync up. Those receivingg the error “Item is no longer available” will need to patiently wait as the App Store server you connect to is still syncing up. This is not a GVM app issue.

Update 2: Those using the forwarding method for push notifications (setting up a forward filter in Gmail, etc) had some down time with regards to the notifications. I have resolved the issue and it should be working now.

I see the new update offered on my iPhone via “Apps,” but when I attempt yo update , I get the message that ” the item is no longer available.” Weird. Any idea what’s going on? Also, when I toggle the “push notifications” off and on again in “Settings,” I do not see a new email address appear, but the same one that has been in place. Will the new one appear only when the new update is installed?

Yep, same here, can’t download it. ‘Item is no longer available.’

Same here – must be a problem with the update. Hopefull fixed shortly.

Same here. What is the new address and how to set it up?

Same here. Says download not available.

    May 12th, 2012 at 11:21

The update is clearly not working.. it’s a real shame.. so many issues and this was one of the best Google Voice Apps in the App Store.

  7. May 12th, 2012 at 11:25

This is a App Store sync issue, nothing to do with the actual App itself. It takes time to propagate throughout all the servers.

  8. Michael Hart
    May 12th, 2012 at 11:41

Its worth the wait for the app to propagate, this is by far the best Google Voice app

    May 12th, 2012 at 13:05

    YES It’s working!! Thank you!

  11. May 12th, 2012 at 14:17

All should be well regarding Push notifications. App Store is slowly bringing GVM+ back online.

I believe Sean and the app are innocent, Apple sucks.

    Sean-

New app is downloaded, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HARD WORK – LOVE THE APP !!!

I did (I think) find a bug in the latest version after I switched to the new email method.. privacy push settings are not longer being saved right (they end up “on” regardless of trying to turn them off or not) and the privacy settings are not working (they always show the txt content) <– a minor bug

Thanks again for all your hard work. There are many like me who rarely comment, and just appreciate you on a daily basis.

    Thanks again!

apparently you fixed the bug.. woohoo
just now after diaabling privacy, disabling push, reenabling push, reenablin privacy, now it works (tried same steps earlier and it didnt)
      Thanks Sean!

New Push e-mail not working for me. Trying to add xxxx@bold.gvmpl.us e-mail to Gmail – not getting Google verification e-mail. Tried twice, and it’s been 20 minutes now.

    Help.

      Same here…. xxx@gvmpl.us doesn’t generate a verification e-mail to my account.

        Seems like it’s currently down

        May 12th, 2012 at 18:33

Haven’t received the verification email yet either. Do I need to remove the old ‘appspotmail’ address in order for me to receive the verification email for the new ‘gvmpl.us’ address? I’m afraid to do so because my push is currently working (apparently with the old address) and I don’t want to mess that up until I know the new address works.

Received my Google verification email and got Push all set up with the new address. Working perfectly. Thanks!

      May 12th, 2012 at 20:05

Finally got verification and things seem to be on track. Perhaps the servers were overloaded with everyone switching over :-)

  15. May 12th, 2012 at 20:30

The email proc died for a couple hours (away from computer). Working out the little kinks – all good now.

Thanks, Sean! The verification emails came through!

Except the push notifications don’t seem to work with the new address?? Hopefully to be working soon…..actually just got a push notification from the messag I sent from another phone 5 min ago.

I was able to download the newest version of the app, but I cannot get the verification email for the new @gvmpl.us address. I got this failure message:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

    ****@gvmpl.us

    Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 : Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table (state 13).

    Thanks.

Thanks as always for the best GV app (I swear that each update google releases raises my hopes but…it still randomly crashes for me).

Some feature reqs that would make this awesomeR:
    - texting like other iOS apps where you can still see the conversation while you’re typing
    - more spaced out speech bubbles
    - ability to hide number at top of app

    • May 13th, 2012 at 01:29

      Good stuff

      • May 13th, 2012 at 02:52

        Hi! Sean,

        Great products and services!

Just sent a mail with screenshots for problem to correctly display Chinese characters in GVM+.

Another suggestion is to have the slider to able turning on or off for the text preview on the Notification Center for some privacy consideration.

        Thanks!

Update: Push this a.m. took 40 minutes. I removed the old, looong address from the forwarding address drop down menu in Gmail and BOOM! Instant push. Hope this is applicable and helps.

FWIW, in the setup walk-through for other/forwarding method: http://gvmobileservices.appspot.com/setupinstructions , it does not mention to check ‘forward a copy…’ or ‘disable forwarding’ (I have disable checked and works fine)

On the GV Mobile App Store reviews, why are there so many haters about the hard work a single developer is making to keep this app up and running? Also are those reviews about you abusing personal information and calling up people directly full of hot air?

    • May 13th, 2012 at 20:27

Of course. I don’t have personal information to abuse, unless you consider your GV email address personal (for those using push). That same review you’re referring to has been around for a long long time…Apple would have shut me down if it were true.
I did call someone to provide support using information freely available on the internet. I have nothing to hide.
Haters will hate, and there is noting I can do about that.

Everything is working well on my iPhone 4. Push notifications aren’t able to sync with my 3rd gen iPad for some reason. When I swipe the slider to turn push on, it just hangs on “syncing push settings…”. Any thoughts? Love the app!

Great work with all of your updates, man. Even the ones that might have caused issues. It’s amazing that you’re creating something that people want and people use. It’s great.

Sean, when Privacy Push is On for iPad but Off for iPhone (and vice versa), both devices still show the actual text preview. Is this as designed? I only want Privacy Push for the iPad, not the iphone. Not sure if I can have it both ways like this. Let me know? Thanks!

    May 14th, 2012 at 15:34

Sean…thanks for the update. One question: there seems to be a 5 seconds lag when I open the app. Is this common?

    • May 15th, 2012 at 07:57

I suppose it depends if iOS is killing it while in the background due to memory restrictions. So a full launch is needed. Try rebooting your phone to free up memory.

I’ve found sometimes when I have kept a text conversation open for a while, if I continue it, I don’t see the text as part of the old thread (I’ll type the text, send, see it but then it disappears) but I see it if I go to standalone “text”, which is misleading so I usually send the same texts to people over and over, thoughts on this?

    • May 15th, 2012 at 08:00

Craig – yeah, after some time (not sure how long), Google will bump out a conversation into a new conversation (fresh slate). This confuses the app currently. The fix is to jump out of the conversation if its an old one and see if a new one is there.
It’s pretty painful to combine those conversations as is, hence why my app is the only one to do it. I’ll see what I can do in fixing this particular issue.

    Hi Sean,
For some reason, push notification is not working. If I refresh manually the text messages come in, but not automatically. I followed the set up instructions. I have a 3GS on 5.1 FW.

Nice update as usual. Love how when you mention updates, it’s available really quickly (and not three months later).

Is there a way to later one integrate the “Sending” status into the top bar like the native iOS apps? It’s still way better than the enormous Google “Sending” that pops up when you send a message, but I’d like to be able to write another text while another is being sent.

Also, when I open a text notification, the app loads the conversation, but it doesn’t always automatically refresh the convo to include the latest message. Is there a way for the app to automatically refresh whenever a convo is opened?

    Hi Sean,
I figured out the problem. I was on WiFi at work and the signal wasn’t strong, so my push notification weren’t coming through quickly. Once I got home and connected with my WiFi there it worked well.

    Sean,

Thank you for this great app. I have noticed since the latest update, when I text two recipients at the same time the text is not sent to either of them. This used to work fine. I send group texts all the time. I have tried rebooting the iPhone 4S on 5.1.1.

I can send the text to a single recipient and it goes through just fine. I can look in history and see the text. I send it to two recipients and I cannot see it in history and the recipients never receive the text.

    Any thoughts?

    Regards,

    Brent

Thanks for the update Sean. Was sitting in limbo because I wasn’t getting notifications for texts. Everything seems to be working! Glad I did not have to go to another app, yours is the best hands down.

Back to broken dialing again. It’s a shame, because I really like this app. It’s much better than the alternatives, when it’s working. Sadly, it seems to keep breaking.

I even just uninstalled / rebooted / reinstalled.

Still not dialing. I’m back to using ThinkDialer, which I don’t really like, as they don’t use the addressbook as well as you do. You’ve integrated use of Exchange GAL and merging contacts that come from multiple sources (like say when I’ve got my wife in my work and home addressbooks), and they don’t. But since the core function of the app is to dial, well, you get the idea…

I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it. I switched to the @gvmpl.us email address. Push notifications are simply not happening. Nor is the badge on the icon (there’s no badge at all.) “Push Notifications” is enabled in GVM. I am forwarding the email via a filter in Gmail. In the Notifications section of Settings on the iPhone, GVM has everything enabled.

I must be missing something, but I can’t figure out what!

    May 24th, 2012 at 20:43

I uninstalled and reinstalled app. It won’t let me select direct dial as the method. The app is not recognizing that I already entered the number to forward my Google Voice number to. I’ve tried deleting the information and re-entering it to no avail. Any thoughts? Thanks!
