1. It should remember the last number I dialed and let me connect with one tap. There’s a significant delay involved in pulling up the GV history.
2. The app should thread out history recall if possible (may not be possible given how the screen scraping works). App might do better to have its own call history.
3. The main screen should show me what number will be connected and let me change that immediately from the main screen. I sometimes set the app to have my mobile phone connect, sometimes my home phone. If I change and forget, I can cause GV to connect my home phone to my parents — while I’m driving!
4. When you do use the app to connect a home phone to a distal phone, the GV Mobile screen responds with “call canceled’ — even though the call does complete. This is a minor bug.
Favorites would be a pretty cool feature. Seems to be the only thing that the current iPhone app has that yours does not. But really that is a pretty minor difference. Otherwise it looks like a great app. I plan on purchasing it.
Hi Sean,
Do you know when google is going to finally release Google Voice? I purchased your app which I love, although I can not use the features just yet. Or does anyone else know when Google Voice is going to be released to the public? I guess this is the million dollar question.
I’m getting a little bit antsy, because I really want to put it to good use.
First, a bug: the first time i go into contacts in each session, it starts off at the last names beginning with ‘S’, rather than at the top.
Second, some suggestions – some may be limited by google, others by apple, but i’d definitely like to see:
1. transcripts! (this also works with #2)
2. offline access. i know i won’t be able to place or receive new calls, sms, or vm, but contacts could be saved locally, as could history and vm transcripts.
3. Support for contact groups. Currently it only has ‘All Contacts’.
4. A way to turn off SMS forwarding, preferably from the sms screen. (no sense in having it sent to both the phone AND gvmobile app). Since i have no text plan on my phone, i could receive the first message there, and take the rest with my ipod, saving me texting fees. Probably also useful for iphone users, so you aren’t receiving texts both within the app AND on the phone at the same time.
5. a combined history and voicemail, with filters at the top (all, VM, missed, dialed, with a preference for a default to satisfy those who prefer to just see VM. it seems a waste of space to have both in the menu, i’d actually prefer to see a direct link to contacts.
5. An option to start on a different screen – i’m more interested in seeing voicemail and history. Others may use it more to place calls, so they should retain that option.
6. badge counts for voicemails, missed calls, & sms within the application, and on the app icon, like the facebook app has for messages & notifications. ideally, with push, but that may require something on google’s end even after iphone os 3.0 is released.
I rescind that bug, that is an issue with the ipods contacts, not with your app. Apparently it returns to wherever you were when you last used the contacts app.
The app seems to work well. Will you be adding background SMS notification when iPhone 3.0 software becomes available? I really hate that I don’t see my SMS messages without manually checking GV. If only Google would add SMS to email forwarding…
@krod
I went onto the Google Voice website, and found this “We expect to have the service ready for new users in a matter of weeks, and are focused on opening it as soon as possible. ”
Anyway, Sean, I know domestic is for free, but does that include cell phones?
Hi there, I am a google voice user who is just about to purchase an iphone, and I was wondering…will this app alert me when I have new sms in my google voice inbox? I want to use my (free) GV sms to get around ATT’s stingy sms fees…And if it could have a badge when there are items in my GV inbox, it would be the killer app for me.
@sean
First, great app! It is very well designed and runs very well. Great work.
Now my question, are you considering adding sms notifications now that the iPhone 3.0 supports them, or is this prohibitive due to costs, etc?
Hi Sean I just wanted to say thanks for developing this app. I’ll be honest when I first began using it I was a little jarred, by the experience and wasn’t quite used to the way it worked. But after a few moments of fiddling I quickly appreciated and enjoyed your app.
I know that I am probably the 100th person to say this but could you add push notification as a big feature? It would be nice to see a little icon on the GV Mobile app indicating that I have a new SMS without having to manually login in to the app and refresh the SMS tab.
Usability Features:
I think a couple of things would greatly increase the usability. It would be nice to be able to turn off the splash screen. When I want to make a call I don’t want to have to wait for the splash screen. Also, some kind of caching system would be nice so that it doesn’t have to connect to Google first before I can use the program. Other than that I think it is a great program.
When entering an SMS message when it’s the first in a new thread I can position the curser back in the message to correct a typo but if you are responding in a thread (not the first message in a thread) I am not able to go back into the message to correct or change a word
Hi Sean. Overall, I love this app, thanks for developing it. My two big requests would be 1)a favorites screen/group and 2)badges so that I know immediately how many messages I have without having to open the app. Otherwise, awesome. Thanks.
You can turn off SMS forwarding from the edit menu for your mobile number at the Google Voice website. Under settings go to phones and edit your mobile number. Make sure Receive SMS on this phone is unchecked and your golden.
Just bought – great app. Though missing one important feature (favorites) and some nice to haves (Push notifications/badges for SMS, VM, etc). Also, a more out-there, but nice feature to have would be profiles – i.e. presets with what number to ring and what number to generate calls from etc.
Also, are there any ways to do URL links to make it dial from other apps? I know you can do that with the iPhone main dialer.
No push guys … I did a post on the main page about it. I know it would be kick ass, but I _can’t_ do it. There are a lot of things I would love to add to it, but without an APIs to streamline the data and speed, it would slow the app down and make it unusable. Everything that everyone has thought of regarding features, trust me, I’ve already thought of it. There are reasons why things aren’t in GV Mobile. Some things, like Favorites, are just a matter of me figuring out the best possible UI layout and implementing it, others, like unread voicemail badge count, goes back to the lack of an API and the narrow bandwidth some people have (iPhone 2G people).
Hi Sean, great app. I purchased it for the iPhone, but Apple pissed me off over a warranty issue so I bought the palm pre and handed the non-numbered iphone to my daughter for ipod touch use.
Hi Sean, I just got my Google Voice invite (finally), and of course the first thing I did was buy GV Mobile – great, indispensible app. Anyway, after I initially set up my account, while in GV Mobile…I added a second phone to ring. Once added, is there any way to remove a phone to ring? Or does it even matter? You can remove phone numbers to forward calls to inside of Google Voice settings….but I dont see “Phone to Ring” settings in the Google Voice settings anywhere. Thanks!
I paid for the full version of GV Mobile and love it–I just got my invite to GV yesterday. The one thing we need is push notification for IM that come through GV. Once that is done your app will be perfect. Did notice a bug, though too. When sending an SMS and attempting to use the iPhone address list to select a contact, it doesn’t transfer that contact to the To field if there is only one number for the contact. Keep up the great work!
@Nathan
Just realized you addressed push already. I’m assuming you’re talking about the google APIs. That’s a real bummer. I would have been great. You might still try it and note in the app that it can degrade performance as to allow the choice…
3rd post in day: Recognizing that you would need a few additional things for push capability (like a server), I would be willing to pay a couple bucks a month to be able to have push with your app even if it meant my info being stored on your server. Just allow me to use my own encryption key within the app to protect privacy. I know…I’m grasping at straws here…
I can not login, it keeps saying invalid credentials. I know my username in GMAIL and password checked 4 times, and it allows me in Google Voice and YES I have an account, what can I do to fix this
GV Mobile is one of my favorite apps. I like the icon, visual voicemail and the layout. It’s the best Google Voice app made with no competition.
Please don’t change it too much. Google’s starting to dish out more numbers. A lot of us have more than one number. Suggestion for the next update? Make the best GV app handle multiple GV phone numbers. I tried using a second GV app for my othe GV number but the other GV apps available stink.
Thank you for a great app Sean.
@David Patrick If you are using the free version, it might do this. I need to update the free version to fix a number of bugs. The paid version has already been updated to fix this issue. If you’re using the paid version, shoot me a screen shot of the error message.
@RF There are a couple bugs in the free version that didn’t get updated yet. I plan on putting out an update for the free version on the weekend. The paid version from the App Store works flawless though…
i bought this application of the itunes. and i just signed up for google voice few minutes ago. spent 299 and this application wouldn’t let me log in.!.
this is crazy!
@joseph Is it because Google Voice is only available upon invite? So to say you just signed up seems impossible. Are you able to login to http://www.google.com/voice ? If not, there’s your problem. If so, send me a screen shot of the error message.
Sean, great product. Using it with an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, with OS 3 update.
I know this is not an actual VOIP/SIP app or dialer. I don’t know the limitations that Apple has put on the API, (and the same thing at the GV end of things by Google), but would it be possible to:
(a) Initiate a dial-out, and then launch another App from the iphone/ipod touch, or
(b) Initiate a “delayed dial-out” and let you exit GV Mobile, and manually start another app (like SipPhone for iPhone or Skype?)

Even apart from that, this has been great!
Yeah, I really wish the iPhone/iPod Touch allowed multiple apps to run at the same time!
There is no way to do like a dial delay and have the app close to open up another app…if Apple allowed us to run multiple apps, it would be possible. If Google had a special command to delay the call, it would work.
The following small changes would really help:
1. It should remember the last number I dialed and let me connect with one tap. There’s a significant delay involved in pulling up the GV history.
2. The app should thread out history recall if possible (may not be possible given how the screen scraping works). App might do better to have its own call history.

Can I check sms as well? I’ve been using GV to send & receive sms and it works lovely but I noticed your site only says send. thanks
Can u make this product for blackberry storm. This works great on the iphone
I own a blackberry and would like to have it on that on two.
@John Faughnan Good feedback. I’ll consider this stuff for update #2.
I second the blackberry storm idea. This would be awesome, i’d even pay for it.

@Stephen Sorry, no it won’t.
The app looks nice, but I couldn’t see purchasing it unless it had push notification for sms in the works.
I guess those in my boat are waiting for the official google app =(
@sean

Now my question, are you considering adding sms notifications now that the iPhone 3.0 supports them, or is this prohibitive due to costs, etc?
like @ThomasA I’m wondering if a new version will be out that supports Push Notification for iPhone 3.0
I mostly love this app, and just bought it. If you had push notifications it would be perfect. Are there plans to add it?
Push Notification for the SMS will be a nice update

@Paul My heart skips a beat at the thought of developing an app around current web technology.
